What is one thing your glad your government does for diabetics?

I wanting to get out of the US too - it is nice to hear that the health care systems ARE better elsewhere. Maybe now I’ll know where to set my sights at once I seriously consider it. I have been wondering if I moved out of US, would it be hard for me to afford my D? Like someplace like Costa Rica, I was wondering how the medical care system is - my guess is not as good as some other countries.

I have a doc friend who is from the UK but now lives here in US - she can’t believe how horrible the health care system is here. She is said it is a disgrace.

Well you have Australia, Sweden or the UK lol

Canadian Government is aware : more work to be done !!..Lots of advocacy by the Canadian Diabetes Association and their volunteer advocates …
I have met with my Member of Parliament( MP ) in Ottawa , Canada and here in my Province of British Columbia with my Member of the Legislative Assembly ( MLA ) in Victoria , besides visiting his office in my Community discussing Diabetes related matters .
An on going matter !
Having said that , the Canadian and Provincial Governments have programs , that subsidize the cost of diabetes supplies . Every Province is different …please remember my first paragraph for those, who want to be …advocates !

New article I read today about the new US healthcare system. The one that collects money for 5 years before it starts doing anything. Wonder how Pelosi feels about this. Maybe she’s had too much botox, that is covered by her medical insurance, by the way.

"The Obama administration has not ruled out turning sick people away from an insurance program created by the new healthcare law to provide coverage for the uninsured.

Critics of the $5 billion high-risk pool program insist it will run out of money before Jan. 1, 2014. That’s when the program sunsets and health plans can no longer discriminate against people with pre-existing conditions…"

I’m glad that my governement has universal health care and that I don’t have to pay to see the doctor or specialist or for any of my tests. I’m glad that money or whether my insurance will cover something is not a factor that I need to consider in order to receive treatment for health problems.

Same here… Our universal health care is called Medicare. and everyone can see a doctor for free… And i am glad too that i dont have to worry if insurance will cover me

We are given a wonderful team at the University of Alberta hospital to help us manage our son’s diabetes. Without them, we’d be lost. Now, the Alberta Government needs to get on board for subsidizing pumps. God only knows there are people in the system who have tried to make this happen.

The NDDS really is fantastic, just this morning I payed $70 for a couple months worth of electrodes, the unsubsidized price is $345.

I know… I looked at the pump consumables (i am getting a pump soon) and they were only about $25 a month… It was $260 unsubsidized. I am happy to be a Australian

Snap!
I’m about to start pumping soon too!
I would have already started but my doc is on a 6 week holiday, so I’ve gotta wait for him to get back

I am extremely greatful that my government keeps its nose out of my business (not for long though with the way its going.) Lord only knows if they had control, I would be dead. If they stay away from me I wont blow up and go all “Supernova” on em. And thats the way they want to keep it. Trust me. I have much heartfelt hatred for the way govt does things here in the US, but they do one thing right. The have a consistency that cant be beat when electing idiots with a 3rd grade education to office. Here’s your sign…

I was under the impression insurance companies couldn’t use pre-existing conditions as a way to deny someone after the HIPPA act back in 1996ish. If I’m mistaken, I’ve been working under this idea for years. They can charge you horribly high fees, but have to cover you.

The US Health care system is not made for people who need insurance. I learned this years ago. The insurance companies do not want to pay for anything, so they prefer “healthy” people who never go to the doctor. Some system, eh?

I should have added, if anyone is thinking of immigrating to Canada, please bring your own Dr. We’re fresh out. I just heard on the news that some Drs. are doing Group appointments(about 15 People at once) now because of the lacking. Murphy!! What’s this world coming too? Hopefully, I won’t have to get into that quagmire.

lol also anyone wanting to immigrate to Australia also bring a doctor too… We are short of Dr. but we would never do group appointments… A lot of people I have talked to are nearly moving countries because of all this… So Canada or Australia will supply you for cheap  (Gotta love the NDSS)

Don’t know about that act - all I know is that they do it. That one of the big points of the health care reform here in the US - to make it sure that you can not be turned down for a pre-existing conditions. I saw a story about a little boy who has a serious condition (can’t remember what it is) but his family can’t get health insurance just because of his conditiion is pre-existing (and probably because the insurance companies know it will be expensive).

I am extremely glad that we had a governor who had diabetes and was diagnosed while in office. I don’t agree with his politics, nor his personal life nor his handling of his own diabetes, BUT he made sure that there were bills, laws and financing available for diabetics to receive health care, meds, strips, meters, etc for a very long time. God bless him for that!

Communism is good sometimes. Here in Capitalist Alberta we get nothing.

I live in Ireland and don’t have to pay anything for my diabetes supplies. Everything is paid for. I got a pump 7 months ago and I have no idea how much the pump or supplies cost… I just call to the pharmacy whenever I need anything. Diabetes is considered a Long Term Illness so all medication and supplies are free.

I can’t narrow it down to one. Universal medicare - I don’t pay to see my doctor or specialists or for medical treatment. Chronic disease program - my pump, pump supplies, insulin, testing strips etc. are completely covered with the exception of $250. deductible/year. Eye care - my eye check ups are free. Diabetes Clinic - I have can access my Certified Diabetes Educator (free) for consultatons etc. Diabetes nutritionist - same as my CDE.
