When Disconecting the pump

Today was the first time that I disconnect my pump from the canula part without placing the cap that is the same as the tube! Is that fine or I should always place a cap if I removed the tube thing from the site!

Also when I connect will be there any air that I need to consider when giving units?

Thx

I put the cap on only when I take a shower. Not sure why I do this or where I heard/read I should, but I do. Maybe it was a diabetes educator who suggested i do it. The only other time I disconnect is when I exercise. When I connect again, I take a fixed prime bolus of .9 to get the insulin flowing. Seems to work for me.

I disconnect it to exercise and I did not have any caps with me, so I just disconnect it and exercised without a thing on the canula part, wonder if thats fine or not!

Relax, NO Name. It’s okay to walk or run around without the cap. It’s primarily to keep water out, but I never use it and never had an issue. Don’t worry about getting air in the cannula or the tube, either. They’re designed to prevent that.

HOWEVER - NOT a good idea to disconnect for exercise. Look at it this way - non-diabetics don’t turn off their pancreas’s when they exercise. You may think you are helping to avoid a low, but the fact is that the insulin your pump is delivering now doesn’t have any effect for about two hours. So disconnecting the pump does not affect your current insulin levels, but two hours from now you will be receiving NO INSULIN. This can lead to ketoacidosis - it did for me.

Try handling exercise this way - for light exercise or exercise under 60 minutes, don’t change your basal rates or remove your pump. If you eat before exercise, reduce your bolus by about one unit. For heavy exercise or longer periods, reduce your basal rate by 25% starting two hours before you begin to exercise. Return it to normal immediately afterwards. Always keep your meter and plenty of fast acting carbs with you.

Terry

I always use the caps (I use quicksets) because “naked” the hub seems a bit sharp to me (I ahve pretty sensitive skin)
I alwys only bolus for wahtever insulin I have missed as basal while disconnected.

The only time disconnect exercise wise is to belly dance–even then I have to watch for the low–followed by a crudy high --but not predcitable timing wise–after dancing

Same here, I never use the cap. I also don’t like the idea of carrying it around somewhere that won’t be sterile, and then sticking it into the infusion set.

Thx Terry, I really missed what you said! Never thought about it that way and yes I was doing that to avoid any lows, but yesterday it was high after exercise!

Thx again for your advise I will do it

i almost always cap my site before a shower (and to aviod that whole unsanitary issue, i keep them either with my pump supplies in the closet or in the zipper pouch of my meter), but everyone forgets from time to time. it’s probably not a big deal and i’ve never personally had a problem after forgetting to cap. the seal from the hub keeps it from getting any air in it. if you want to just double check, i suggest calling the 1-800 number for the manufacturer to confirm.

Whenever I disconnect, I cap it. I’m using Silhouette’s from MM. I keep the cap in my testing kit or, in the vial where the test strips are. I always test/correct prior to disconnecting so it is easier for me to do it this way.

When I go to the gym, I decrease my basal rate by 50%. I never disconnect for exercise even if I am going on the uneven bars or the balance beam. As Terry explained, non-diabetics can’t turn off or remove their pancreas, I won’t either!

If you feel it gets in the way, you can clip it on the small of your back for the treadmill or bike, or the sleeve of your upper arm for the weight machines. As for my beam and uneven bars, I use the waist pouch from MM and move it to the small of my back

I cap the canula set only when I disconnect briefly for swimming (had some inflammed infusinon sites after a few swimming experiences, even though water or air is not supposed to be able to enter the canula). I don’t cap when I disconnect for showering.

Whoever designed those caps: did you purposely make them easy to lose?!! Why not design them to clip into another side of the canula set when pump tubing is attached? That way, I wouldn’t suck them up with the vacuum cleaner, find them mixing with the lint at the bottom of my purse or cohabitating with used blood glucose strips in the ashtray of my car!

I have never used a cap. The only thing they are good for are keeping my dogs occupied.

lol, wont they swallow them!

I have never capped, pumping since 2001 . I only sometimes disconnect when a hair wash and kind of unable to put pump on shelf in shower stall , depending on where I did infuse and tubing not in the way . A good time for me to check tubing for airbubbles . I will prime if YES and also prime to make certain no air at end close to where I attach .
I never disconnect for exercise .

I wish we could get 5 cents each for recycling them. I’d be rich!
