This is a question from a friend. She has been to several docs to try to find the cause and can't. Any ideas? Here is the scoop in her own words....
I have had T1D for 44 years. Through the years I would have infrequent episodes of high fever, chills, and vomiting. The episodes would start with chills followed by a quick rise in temperature, followed by vomiting. All would return to normal within a 4-hour period. I am 50 now, and the episodes are much more frequent (three last month) and they last longer. Anybody have any ideas?
Hmm. It sounds a bit like a problem my son has developed. He's 22 years old and has recently been dx'd with Muniere's Disease, which is a problem with his inner ear and will ultimately affect his hearing. He had infrequent episodes of chills, dizziness, nausea and vomiting that could last a few hours, sometimes one or two days. The symptoms come on suddenly and dramatically. No one could figure out what it was until he finally met a new doctor at a walk-in clinic near his university who suggested MD. Your friend may not have MD, but could have a problem with fluid in her ears that wouldn't be painful but could produce symptoms like those you've described.
It might also be hormonal, at least at this point in her life. Many woman have a wide variety of symptoms related to menopause. Not everyone has hot flashes. I know several women who have sudden chills more than hot flashes and one of my friends finds that the hot flashes she has are accompanied by nausea.
I have no direct answer, but may I please first observe that there's more to health than getting our imperfect insulin approximately right. Against a diabetic background of a lifelong auto-immune stress, seemingly small triggers can be tipping points. As the heroine in Romancing The Stone said, "bastards have brothers..." Short term: Known medical syndromes aside, is there a class of food or an activity that you could localise and associate with the problem through experience? Or perhaps contact with one seemingly mild household or industrial chemical? Or a monthly cycle? Long term: balancing gut flora, assuring trace elements, getting quality antioxidant support, these are all good avenues to explore, generally they have low associated risks, and despite their broad brush approach, if they manage to supply just one missing key, or thwart just one endocrine disruptor, they are worth pursuing - in my opinion.
Thanks to both of you for your responses. I'll pass both on to my friend. We have often wondered if it might be hormonal. Early on the spikes came right before monthly cycle. Now the pattern seems more random. We have wondered if she is not venturing into menopause, thus the increase in frequency as time goes on.
I would go with the hormone factor. I know that I had many problems with the monthly cycle and just what u have told us about her. Now menopause was a trip for me too. Just saying I'm sooooooo glad all that's over now.
This could be due to autonomic neuropathy (basically, damage to the autonomic nervous system similar to the damage that diabetics can get to the peripheral nervous system).
Body temp is controlled by the autonomic nervous system (it's what regulates body temperature). I believe I was told once that if there is damage to these nerves, not uncommon in T1 diabetics who have had the condition for many years, fluctuations in body temperature can be see.
Please let us know what her doc says. Posts like this can be helpful to others who may have similar symptoms!! And I'm curious as to what the doc says.
heye, yeah my son 19 (type 1) just started vomitting out of the blue ....i think it could have to do with, food poisining (almost raw steack was eaten)? in your opion over the fifty years...have been sick a lot more then ? then say me im normally sick ( flu) once a year? and latey i m 56 now things seems to get more frequent...can u give some advise on what u took to eas the vomiting..eg toast, weak tea?..or even a medicine?
I to would be interested in knowing what the doctor says.
I am having similar issues that started in the past year or so. It is not as frequent as what your friend is going through but I will all of a sudden just start shaking, then vomit and then spike a temperature and return to normal. All within a several hour period. I chalked it up to dialysis but who knows.
