I was diagnosed with “brittle sugar diabetes” (type 1) in 1969 when I was 8 years old. My Aunt (Mom’s sister) had been diagnosed back in the early 1920s when she was only 7, but died 2 years later from complications when she got sick. My Mom and 16 year old brother were diagnosed at the same time when I was 12- both type 1. Several other family members were also diagnosed as adults. I was blessed to have 3 healthy children, although my youngest, Michael found out at 16 that he, too, was diabetic. He and I are both on the Medtronic insulin pump- 670G and doing well. I have had diabetes now for more than 51 years and am still quite healthy. Last year, my Opthalmologist found that I have basic diabetic retinopathy.
