Diagnosed T1D in 1984, started on an insulin pump in 1987, and a CGM in 2009. Low carb, moderate protein, and high fat has been my way of eating since 2012. It allowed me to make important gains in blood sugar control and quality of life. I lost weight, reduced insulin intake, lowered my A1c, and generally restored sanity to my metabolic life.

I grew up in the Chicago suburbs and lived in Minnesota, Idaho, and Washington State before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1986. I lived for 30 years in San Francisco and retired in 2011. In April, 2016, I moved to Portland, Oregon.

I pursue four major blood glucose goals (in order of importance):

Time in Range, 65-130 mg/dl, >= 80%.
Time hypo <= 5%.
Standard Deviation <= 20 mg/dl.
Average < 100 mg/dl.

My primary exercise is using a rebounder (mini-trampoline). I also supplement with walking.

For the last two years my A1c ranged from 5.0-5.7%. Read Sugar Surfing in 2015. It changed my philosophy of managing my diabetes and I now appreciate its dynamic nature. I added the inhalable insulin, Afrezza, mostly for corrections, in 2015.

As of November 2016, I use a do-it-yourself open-source automated insulin dosing system, Loop. The Loop system consists of an app running on my iPhone, a Dexcom G6 CGM, an old MiniMed 722 insulin pump, and a frequency translator/repeater called a RileyLink.

Last, but not least, since 2010, I've been paired with a Yellow Lab hypoglycemia alert service dog, Norm. I'm a believer in Chuck Eichten's philosophy that life with diabetes can't be perfect, but we can make it better!
