I've been T1 since I was 24 but had a very long honeymoon period and was taking very little insulin for many years. My first c-peptide test in 2000 after 19 years showed I was just below the 95% reference range so it means I had been gradually turned into a diabetic by the medical system. It saddens me that so few people are aware of the problem of down regulation. People who are newly diagnosed should really pay attention. My current doctor was new to me in 1986 and he told me within 5 years a T1 would be totally dependent. I was at that point already at that time and not so badly off so it encouraged me even more to do what I had been doing. I am a Walker and used to go walking a lot for decades. It would take another 15 years for me to find out that just having metals in your mouth side by side can be part of creating the autoimmune attack on the beta cells. More people should be trying to reverse their individual cases of diabetes rather than making it worse by taking insulin. My taking supplemental nutrients from 1986 onwards ended up being the best approach. I haven't felt really diabetic until the last 15 years as it wasn't the center of my life. I had other projects that occupied my mind more and being diabetic was just a reality I had to deal with and I am likely healthier as a result.
