I just put a bottle of glucose tablets on my night stand. It takes so much willpower to get up in the middle of the night. I did not treat a couple of lows because I did not want to get up.
I always used to go downstairs to the kitchen and drink OJ because I perceive OJ to be healthier than glucose tablets. Now I reconsider because I don’t think it is smart to go downstairs when low. The potency of OJ varies a lot. Many times a glass of OJ was too much and I went high. Didn’t like that. With glucose tablets I know exactly how many to eat. No surprises.
I don’t care for mustard but can tolerate it. Mushrooms, well, I can’t use that word here!
I keep something by my bed also all kinds of stuff actually , I have a small fridge with juice boxs in it
I am keeping glucose tabs with me at all times. While I don’t particularly like the taste of them, I like the fact that I can carefully measure exactly what I’m eating. And they work fast too.
Danny, you’re not alone. I do keep three rolls of smarties (18g carb) with me at all times (I’ve found that three rolls fits in an empty film canister). So I have those next to me in bed, but for some reason I never seem to use those to treat a low, and I seem to always take a walk to the kitchen. If my BG is higher than mid-40’s and it doesn’t feel like its dropping fast, I’ll have some fruit (banana, orange, dates depending on what I have). But if it is going down fast I’ll start with some of the smarties since they’re slightly quicker.
BTW, I love both mustard (I put it in everything - sandwiches, vegetables, soup, …) and I have loved mushrooms since I was a kid. So next time you make your mushrooms with mustard sauce, let me know - no leftovers - I promise.
Danny you are not alone. I will get up and walk down the hallway to my kitchen to treat a low. Sometimes that walk is easier to do than others. I have fallen twice doing this walk but I don’t think I will be keeping anything by my bed anytime soon. Doggie, my sister’s dog stays with me and she likes glucose tables so I don’t keep them in my room.
Danny,
I have glucose tabs everywhere (another hater of them),and also keep a sleeve of them on my nightstand. In the drawer is the glucagon kit (also have those almost everywhere). Over on my computer table (bedroom), I also keep a can of real pepsi, as well as 1 real pepsi or other kind, in the kitchen fridge. BUT…I always go to the kitchen to treat a low…that’s if I wakeup during a low. When I had the cgm with alarms (new one not here yet), I would still go to the kitchen to treat, then sit at the computer table for 15 to 30 minutes.
In my work shop (just off of my kitchen), I have the small fridge for my insulins, some sort of real pop or other drinkable treatment. I don’t get hungry anymore with a low, so drinks work just fine. Since I need more room in my work shop, I have been considering moving the small fridge to my side of the bed (or in my closet). That was actually my husband’s idea.
He very rarely wakes up unless I need his help, unless the light is on.
I like these different questions that you ask. It is very interesting to see what and how others do. Thanks for asking the questions.
Trisha ~ also a lover of mustard, and sauteed mushrooms
I keep glucose tabs on the bedstand. I have no intention of breaking my neck going down two flights of stairs if I’m low at night.
Maurie
If that works for you, fine, but frequently I have forgotten to put something by my bed, wether a glucose drink or snack and have only woken when I am on the way to the centre of the earth when it comes to low blood sugars, soaking wet, unable to orientate or even sit up, and then I am well and truly stuffed!
(my first nurse used to have the saying "9 is the sky, 4 is the floor - and I wake up at 1.2 mmols)
I sometimes cannot even work out what I am supposed to do about a hypo, so the sweets near the bed, for me are a lifesaver. At least then I do not have to make a decision as to what, I can just try the sugar and see if that makes me feel better, and it is usually just what the doctor ordered! I love this illness - at least the treatment can be quite pleasant!
When I first got the CGM and found the accuracy wasn’t always dead on I would tend to ignore the low alarms that happened at night. They were always mild lows and it was a combo of lack of trusting that it was correct and never wanting to get up when I’m low. I had to work to change my response (lows = foggy headed thinking). My motto became, When it alarms, you test and treat. I didn’t need any excuse not to follow through, so I started stashing the small juice boxes in the night stand. It has helped.
I also don’t want to get up when I am low, and sometimes ignore the low alarms from my cgms in the middle of the night. I keep a juice box by the bed, as well as gummy lifesavers. I can’t stand the glucose tabs, and find that I will not treat a low with them. I have been keeping the gummy lifesavers with me as well as a can of sprite to bring me up quickly. I recently started symlin and I have found that when I drop low, it’s been real low and I need something to bring me up very fast. I would love a fridge next to my bed…I can’t stand warm juice boxes or sodas.
I have glucose tabs in my nightstand because they taste nasty. Otherwise I will eat everything in sight when I’m low. lol
Lol. That is another reason why I cannot go to the kitchen. Once I have worked out that I do need to eat (sometimes so confused I get there and wonder what I am supposed to be doing!) You would have thought that with so many people in the world hating glucose tablets that they would work on making them taste a bit nicer, wouldn’t you? I use glucose tablets as a final resort, when there is nothing else to hand!
Yes, I sometimes get that way too, and totally overtreat a low, and sometimes I don’t want to eat a thing.
Years ago when I had symptoms, I used to go downstairs too. I never hurt myself but I used to either open the fridge and cupboards, trying to remember why I was there. Or way over-eat foods until I felt Better. Which of course, sent my sugars soaring.
I drink plenty of fluids during the day which allows me to wake up once or twice during the night… While in the can, I test my sugars. Usually, it’s Fine but on occasion when it isn’t, I have a juice box and a couple of mini bars on my nightstand. I would drink 1/2 the juicebox and a mini bar. My Hubby(light-sleeper) almost always asks if I’m okay cuz he’s always willing to help out. I prefer to look after myself the Best I can cuz he has enough to do and there will be times when I do need him. I do appreciate his help though.
Cinnamon rolls…LOL…ya right Danny.
I too would like a fridge beside my bed. I do have one in another bedroom for my insulin supplies - take up too much room and it is unhygienic to have them in the ordinary fridges. I wonder though, you would need to get a very quiet one.
Jelly beans (& extra meter) in the nightstand drawer. Quiet munching. I’ve walked into walls stumbling out of the bedroom & fallen down the stairs. Actually, once I’ve fallen up the stairs. That takes real grace.
Here is a little soundtrack to go with your Dexcom Bat Signal…Da-Da Da-Da…BATMAN!
he…he…
Ha!
