A.M. Sugar Fix Question

note to self to buy smarties! i’m sooooo tired of orange glucose tablets and jelly babies!

what are lifesavers?

I was worried about switching to them because of calories, but they only have about 5 calories more than glucose tablets. A friend told me that in Bernstein’s book, he recommends using things that have dextrose listed first in the ingredients list. If you look at the ingredients between Smarties & glucose tablets, they are almost the same.

They are a lot cheaper also. You get about 64 packs of Smarties in a one pound bag. That is 384 grams of carbs for $2. You get 50 glucose tablets in the bigger jar and you get 200 grams of carbs for almost $5.

Can you tell I am a bean counter!

Yes, the large, individually wrapped Lifesavers (4 grams each) in container by bedside, six Lifesavers in her jeans pockets at all times; also in purse, pockets of jackets… everywhere. I now leave an opened juicebox with straw in on her bedside table; she has been low sometimes in between her next night time BS check. It is important to keep something nearby and also on your person for treating lows at all times. If too low, you may not make it to the kitchen. May not realize you need juice if low enough to be disoriented but, for the most part, this is one habit that can keep you safe.

LOL! You got the grace to do that Gerri! We do do some funny things when we’re low huh??? LOL!

Never go anywhere without the gulcon kit. It’s came in handy more than once away from home and at home too!

I don’t even own one! I don’t have anyone here to use it on me so having one won’t help.

What few times I’ve been alone and caught myself going under 30 (to tell the truth ppl won’t leave me alone often) With the help of my meter catching the low I’ve been able to give myself a shot. One time Miss Perfect was going to do it herself and belive it or not I couldn’t figure out how to get the needle into the vial to desolve the gluagon in there. LOL! That took me 40 minutes by the time I FINALLY done it and gave myself the shot I was down to 20 LOL! Boy did I get ticked at myself!!! I even left the kit needle and all, all over the place just for my g-daughter to come in an hour later pick up the needle and ask me why I had it out. LOL! Yes even my 4 year old g-daughter knows what to do if Nanny starts acting funny. I trained all of them good! LOL! Like I’ve said many times I’m hypo unawear and sometimes fall into seizers. Wanna freak out a “normal” person do that one time! LOL!

Gerri I have fallen up the stairs a few times. I still don’t know how I did it.

I keep skittles on the side of my bed. One it is convenient when I get those night lows. Two I dont want anyone else eating my low supply, I have to protect it in my household…LOL…If I get up and eat from the kitchen I tend to over do it, with skittles I know exactly how much I should take.

OMG let’s hear it for skittles!

Doris I’m the same way. Glucagon kit is helpful. The only thing that I don’t like about it is that it gives me that hung over feeling without having a night of drinking. Three weeks ago Saturday my brother’s bf had to do a glucagon shot on me. Wish there was something else that could have been used. All day my brother and his bf kept asking me if I was okay and how I was feeling. I told them like I was hung over now let me be. Lol. My brother knows when I say let me be then I’m pretty much okay.

Somebody on another message board pointed out that Skittles weigh exactly 1G. I don’t use them as much as I used to but had some issues w/ being indecisive about flavor combos while my BG was crashing “6 orange and 6 yellow and, hmmmm, 2 purple or 3 purple. Or do I need a green? why the hell do I have so many red ones left? This bag suxx it’s almost all red…oh wait, I should think of something creative to do with the red ones…”

The 12 year-old sorted the red M&Ms to make a rice krispie treat Japanese flag for a relief fund-raiser bake sale last week:

I didn’t save any to keep by my bed for hypos though!

How creative! When I looked at the pic before reading all the text, I thought the bottom part was brown rice at the best, maggots at the worst…lol.

Going completely off on a tangent does anyone think this compassion for a people we wanted to exterminate 60 years ago will teach anyone anything about the insanity of war? Sorry, being a pacifist for nearly 50 years is a pretty thankless task.

Ugh usually when I say “I’m OK” that when everybody here wants me to check my bs b/c I WON’T be wrong at that time (I’m usually falling low) I get mad when they tell me to check it. I give them crap while doing it. Oh and let me be low. That’s when everybody finds something else to do! LOL! That is after I get the gluagon shot.

Yep the hungover feeling along with sky rocketing bs’s. Atleast I’m not seizing so what works for me works. LOL!

Just a little out of date huh Danny! LOL! (alot of mine are too but they still work though not that far out of date.) I can’t brag like you can infact in the last 6 months I’ve used 5 of mine.

It’s awful! By the time I eat 2 I wonder if one more will take care of the low or should I really choke down 2 more? Then I am stuck with the nasty, chalky taste in my mouth and have to decide if it’s worth getting up to brush my teeth or will I need the 4th tab in another 30 minutes? The minty-fruity tab combo is a BIG no-no!

I sometimes do not know that I have had a hypo during the night until I wake up with the taste of something sweet in my mouth - or even the wrappers in my bed!

The whole war crimes thing occurred to me while I was making it too, b/c when I “searched” for “japan flag” on my phone you get both the “regular” red ball on white flag and the perhaps more menacing IJN “rising sun” flag. Really good flags as far as flags are concerned. It also brought those older Japanese paintings of tsunamis to my mind. Trying to explain it to the 12 year old was sort of dicey too, as “did mean things to people” doesn’t realy explain the magnitude of horrors like Nanking?

We’re unique!
