A.M. Sugar Fix Question

Nope, no chalky substance or need to rinse. What’s weird, is almost everyone but me hates glucose tabs. I still believe they are one of the best treatments for lows and would use them even if I did hate the taste, but I don’t! And I consider myself to have a pretty refined palate! I don’t love them, but don’t mind them at all. No clue why.

I do not keep my meter or any food next to my bed and have a ton of lows during the night and always get up walk down a ton of stairs, test and eat.

I think it would be so much better to have it at bedside and test and have glucose tablets, but for some reason I don’t change my routine.

I think it is called laziness and hoping I will never have to test during the night, ha!!

I use to be one of those stumble to the kitchen people, but after moving to our first home where the bedrooms are on the second floor I changed that. I had one of those bizarre dreams where I was deleting my memories like a hard drive and I woke up in a cold sweat. So I started my journey down to the kitchen and as I was taking the stairs that sort of twist I almost took a tumble. Since then, I keep glucose tablets as well as my meter on the bedside table. I use glucose tablets because I am not tempted to over treat or stuff my face when I get a low with the munchies. I wish I could be one of those people who could treat with skittles. Candy seems to have a delayed effect on me.

I have to say that I am liking the idea of a refrigerator next to the bed. But I think the crushed ice would definitely wake up the hubby.

What type of “bag” do you have, like one you carry with you outside of the house? If so it is homemade, purchased, etc.? I use the Scott-EVest but in summer it is too hot and sometimes I run out of pockets in my cargo pants so I’m looking for something new.

I use Reese Cups, 11 carbs for the snack sized ones and they taste great too.

I don’t keep anything next to the bed, I wander into the kitchen and get something like a Reese Cup or a piece of Raisin Bread…my two favs.

Aren’t they slow to go in with all this fat? I tried chocolate a couple of times but it takes forever for chocolate to kick in.

lifesavers are hard candies with fruity flavors…delish

Have a messenger bag that I carry with me. If it is inconvenient I pocket what I need. But the messenger bag lets me carry all my supplies and a book.

I just came across Good & Plenty, and think I will try that to treat nighttime lows (or daytime lows for that matter). I can’t stand the taste of glucose tabs, and will do my best to not have to use them. On occasion, if my cgms alarms in the middle of the night that I am low, I will (almost in my sleep) set a temp basal for much lower than it is running at that time, and hope that will bring me back up. I just can’t stand eating sometimes, especially when I have been awoken from a deep sleep with the alarm. I know it’s not the ideal treatment, but sometimes I get pretty stubborn when my sugar drops!

I have had a couple of bad hypos in my sleep, one of which involved muscle cramps so severe that I couldn’t stand up for a while (tetany). I also had one hypo of 36 and dropping where I couldn’t even raise my arms or use my legs at all.

For this reason, I keep four gels right next to my bed, where I can reach them without having to rise.

I have dextrose tabs and tubes of gel stashed everywhere: car, desk, back-pack, bedroom, etc.

However, I can’t keep candy that I like anywhere in the house or it will mysteriously be eaten by mice (and yes, I do live alone in a mice-free home.) It’s a mystery, I tell ya.

Well, so there will be some left when I need them for a low!!! LOL

I bought a bunch of jelly beans that I’d planned to put into little bags for lows. Nope. Polished them off within 48 hours. I cannot be trusted around sweet things, but as I really dislike the gels and glucose tabs, they’re there when I need them. (Blushing…)

I keep a bottle of water with my gels and tabs – it’s all in the same plastic ziploc bag next to my bed. I think washing them down with water is a good idea – it helps absorption and you can rinse the sugar off your teeth before falling back asleep.

Nope. There are no words fit for a child to hear to describe the horrors of war.

We ought to cut it out.

Wishful thinking?

Jean, you might try setting a trap–it worked for us!

I think jJean was implying that her mouse looks like

LOLz

Heh, when I say “I’m FINE” it’s time to start throwing glucose into me… I’m lucky my bf is 6ft 4 to my 5ft 4, there have been a couple of times he’s had to hold his hand over my mouth to stop me spitting out glucose or jelly beans… I’ve been much better recently, but I can get kinda stroppy at times.

for me it’s the texture - I often get a dry mouth when I’m low so trying to eat a dry powdery glucose tab is pure hell.
