Are you the chosen one? ... Type 1, that is

I am the only Type 1 in my family. My grandfather had Type 2, but so far no one else in my family. I just like to think I am the special one! :)

My Great-Grandfather once mentioned something about a diabetic sibling. But other than that, no one. Three years ago, diabetes was some old person's disease. Now I know otherwise.

P.S. Speaking of diabetic pets, some friends of ours had a dog that was both diabetic and blind. I don't know who to feel sorry for most, the dog or our friends.

My sentiments EXACTLY!!

Im it; got diagnosed during a physical in HS 1980 . No one on either side,15 cousins and none of their kids. My mom's side only one type 2. I am an anomaly.

I too am the only "1" in my family. My Mom had T2 as do my one brother and sister have T2. I am an identical twin. My twin does not have diabetes. some have argued that this is not possible, however it is the case. I have two children and my twin has none; i suspect my having gestational diabetes was what threw me into T1.

Yes, that's us too. Our son was diagnosed at 9 yrs. old and my husband and I looked at each other in the ER (he had DKA) and we said, "so who in your family has diabetes?" We called parents and no one knows of it on either side.....

So sorry to hear about your son,be careful and take care of him, My grandaughter was dx this past Dec.20,2012 at the age of 9 also.

Type 2 runs on my Dad's side of the family, but I am the only known Type 1 on either side of my family neither of my 2 siblings have Diabetes either

I am new to TuDiabetes so I do not know how long this has been up or if you are still looking for input, but I am the "chosen one" or the one and only in my family. It is kind of strange when you can't blame it on the genes. I do not even have close or extended relatives with type 2 let a lone type one. Can not even find a family history 3-4 generations back, at least that no one recorded of being sick and dying young unless they went off to war.

Well, I am the only one in my family with T1... but also adopted so no family history... have had a lot of issues with my diabetes for the years that I have had it.

I am a chosen one too Dino! Not one speck of t1 or even other autoimmune diseases in my family, such a weirdo!

I was the first known diabetic in my family. My grandpa got type 2 years after I was diagnosed type 1.

First T1 and now 2 more (daughters) in my family.....at some point way back when I heard that it wasn't hereditary....I beg to differ.

I'm the first and only T1 in my family. There are a few T2's going several generations back, but no T1s. However, there is a history of hypERthyroidism in several of my female relatives. I've read there's an association between it and type 1. Makes me think I had the predisposition for it, and was fine until some environmental trigger came along. I feel like the virus theory is fairly reasonable. Viruses tend to do as they please and can affect different people different ways. I wish we could discover which one is the culprit for some of these autoimmune diseases, though there may be more than one.

I'm the only type 1 in my family there are other diabetics but all are type 2 and are elderly relatives.
I was in the best shape of my life when I was diagnosed type 1 as an adult. Bah!

Well Dino,
I am a Type I and the only one in my Family. I was 43 I think when they said i was a type II for the first visit to the Doc with a BG of over 500, Really odd now to look back at the time they said type II, 6 foot tall and a 135 lb, some docs just cant put 2 and 2 together. me being blown away by what they found and not knowing any better they treated me for about 2 years as a type II.... My A1c stayed at 13 plus and sugar was never under control. all tyhis crap going on with no insurance I saved up some cash and went a seen a Endo.... BEST THING I EVER DONE IN MY LIFE.....One look at me and they knew there was no way I was a type II.. so they ran their test and sure enough Type I it is.... now here came the shots (pin cushion).. fats acting at first then slow and fast and with each meal winding up taking about 9 shots aday....Untill about 7 months agao i started on the Pump and CGM.... ( another great move I made ) sugars under control A1c 7.0 and i am gaining some weight. only bad thing about being the only one in the family with this is that you are more or less dealing with it on your own. your loved ones dont really understand or how to help. I know my wife would have a hard time dealing with giving me a shot are even understand the signs of low BG and how to fix it. Anyway, your not alone as you can see there are many of us we are a speical breed :-)

Yep, I caught mine at a physical too. At least we didn't end up in the ER with ketoacidosis symptoms.

Awesome discussion. I was diagnosed 14 months ago during a physical because I wanted to get a commercial drivers license. Age 24...no family history. I'm optimistic about living with the disease. It's tough, and there isn't a day that goes by that I don't wish I could go back to not worrying about every carb I swallow and where to take my next injection, but I am healthier than I was two years ago. MDIs, a Dexcom I wear half the time, and a good education into what we're living with and I'm 5.8% A1C.

Now the next challenge.....My health insurance under my parents expires this July when I turn 26! Any advice folks?

I wonder if Dino is still out there paying any attention to this now 39 PAGE thread (!!!!)??

Well, that's okay -- we seem to be still in on the game.

I am the only diabetic of any sort in my family, on either side. There is no history of diabetes anywhere in our family. My two boys, 10 and 16, are 100% a-ok (as of this writing...). I was diagnosed with late onset juvenile IDDM on January 15, 1982 when I was 23.

So, now what? I love ancient threads...

P.S. @TrueTheory -- Get a job with a good insurance plan. It really is as simple as that, if it can be had. It should be part of what you seek when you talk to prospective employers. You don't have to be blunt about it, but be sure to ask what kind of coverage you can expect. Most folks will readily tell you if it is asked in an appropriate way (without a hint of desperation). If you feel uncomfortable asking that someone who is interviewing you, then ask the HR rep you might be able to talk to about this. Good luck!

All by myself, no other Type 1's in my family.
By the time I was in my early thirties, I had seen my Granfather dx with type 2, and my mother dx with type 2.
I made an effort then to increase my exercise and improve my diet, I am glad I did because it made making the transition to the low carb type1 diet a little easier.
I was still floored when I got the original dx, I said no way I exercise faithfully and my diet is pretty good. I was also mad, thinking I had done all this for nothing. I am glad I had though because it was easy for my wife and certified diabetes educator at work to question the dx. The pressure my wife put on the Endo to do the antibodies and c-peptide tests, was the only way we knew early on the Type 1 dx.
