Article - Religious Extremeism or Just Horrible Abuse?

Speaking of hypocrites, I just read the article attachedto the link here and saw nothing to suggest that the couple’s religious beliefs caused them to neglect or abuse their child. Assuming that the main facts alleged in the article are true, all I know is that

  1. a child died under circumstances strongly suggesting neglect
  2. the parents are reported to have been members of a certain religious group
  3. the parents are alleged to have made some very strange (but essentially irrelevant) remarks afterwards.

There is a good reason that in civilized places a person can’t be convicted of a crime on the basis of newspaper reports. I have seen several cases where I had personal, direct knowledge of the facts where the newspapers at least suggested untrue implications associating a crime with an unpopular minority group.

How would the people here feel about a similar article which frequently repeated that the couple charged was Black?

By the way, the reference to “gangerine” makes me even more suspicious of the general quality of the reporting. The average twelve-year-old in English-speaking Canada probably knows how to spell “gangrene”.

Several posts are upset with “child welfare” local authorities and the like. Often, the laws require a child be returned to blood relatives is there are any. There have been cases of children who were severely physically abused, turned over to aunts/uncles or grandparents with the same child rearing behaviors. The child dies in the hands of these relatives. Yes, outrage is proper, but so is making the welfare of the child more important than the “rights” of "blood. I hate to add politics to this, but chances are once steps are taken to release the children in these cases from their abusive homes, people will come out and ptrotest the “big brother taking away our rights as parents”

That story bothers me so much! They must have been completely ruthless. The whole thing was so un-necessary. Why in the world did social services send him back to his parents? None of it makes sense. Poor kid!
As far as the word religious, that could mean so many things these days. Someone that truly knows God would never do a cruel thing like that. Very sad.

You said it Maria32 - right now its a story, and a viral one. What they must have been is part of the story and folks report these must haves as facts. None of it makes sense until sense is made of it, and the sad part in my own opinion is the constant trial, jurist activity, and endless judgement by folks who don’t even know what really took place. Maybe God thought Alex was needed next to her in a more peaceful, safer, happier place :rainbow:

I know we don’t know all the details of the story, but they let their child suffer and slowly die right in front of their faces. How much do we really need to know about them? Surely they were told about his diagnosis, and they had to know he didn’t get taken away from them that time for no reason. And they must have also noticed that he looked and felt much better when he had been in foster care (away from them) for some time. I’m not sure that I would call it judging them. I think there would be something very wrong it people weren’t angry about this. I think they’re a couple of senile savages who need to be punished for this! Yes, I hope he is happy where he is because this life was sure hard on him. Poor kid.( I just re-read my first post and realized that it could have been interpreted another way. I don’t know what religion those people were, but I hope they’re not calling themselves Christians or claiming that God wanted them to do this because that couldn’t be true.)
