OMG - She fired me!!! I left a message, she called. I said I wanted to switch to Levemir. She said, “we talked about this. It’s only once a day.” I said, no, we didn’t discuss it, you just refused. It’s not always once a day for me and I have to adjust over and over - and it’s increasingly unstable. I want to switch. She said, “THEN FIND ANOTHER DOCTOR.”
Well, even though she said that as an insult, I would recommend you find a new endo. NOT because you did anything wrong… but because you deserve a doctor who is MUCH better than that.
You deserve a doctor who will listen to you and that will let you try to find what will work best for you. I am appalled at that doctor and that doctor should be ashamed of herself! That doctor is unlikely to listen to you on the big things if she won’t care enough to give you a try on a different insulin.
Amazing how, when we try to take charge of our own health, we are labeled “noncompliant.” (Which is probably what your doctor considers you.) “Compliant” always seemed like a really passive adjective anyway. What you are is “assertive,” which is a very good thing. I’d say fire her back!
If there is a shortage of specialists in your area as in mine, it will take time and effort to “find another doctor.” Good luck in your search for a doctor who will let you participate in finding a drug or drugs to reach your blood sugar goal. Keep us posted, Lucy
OMG!! That was uncalled for! I hate doctors that won’t work with you. They have the attitude of “it’s my way or the highway”, which is exactly what happened here. The best doctors that I have ever had are ones that actually listen and sometimes treat you as a parent - You know, the ones that even tho they think they’re right, they still let you have your way so we can be proven right or wrong, whatever the case may be, and allow themselves to be proven wrong by their patients and learn from it.
As hurt and in shock as you are, you are probably better off not being with this doctor anymore. Find another practice. Ask other diabetics in your area where they go. Go online and search out possible reviews they may have. This is your life and health. You need to take care of yourself by getting the best you can get - meds, doctors, etc.
I hope your day gets better.
She did you a favor! You will find another doctor that will work out better. I saw my doctor on Thurs and told him I wanted to switch to Levemir and take 2 shots and basal test, etc. and he said “great” let me give you 2 bottles (free) and wrote a script for 2 per month for 1 year!! You just have to keep looking until you find one who is right for YOU!
good luck and stay strong and fight for what YOU want!
I agree with Robyn, she did you a favor. You can now find a doctor who will work with you.
I hope you don’t take her remark personally. Doctors have as much right to choose their patients as we have to choose our doctors (except in emergencies or shortages). If she wants sheep for patients let her have them. She didn’t reject YOU, she rejected your right to control your own health.
Look at your Health Team members as " consultants " …you can fire them , they can fire you.
No doubt it creates " some" stress to accomplish the next steps.
Thanks everyone! I really, really needed all these “hugs”
Feeling better now. I think I’ve found a new doc - I was upfront with them when I called and, frankly, they were kind of shocked, too. So, I have an appointment in a couple weeks, to interview a new “consultant” as Nel put it.
Okay, I’m shocked that any Dr. would do that for any minor reason which I feel this is. I know where I live because of the lack of Drs. they will drop a Diabetic if they feel that their Patient is not trying to help themselves or if they continually miss appointments. Why should they waste Good time when they could be helping someone who wants to work to get their Diabetes in control,
I work with my Drs. but if I feel something works better for me(as I have many times), I’m going to do it. I know my own body Best. My Docs go over my reasoning and agree with my decisions. They are my Guides.
As the others have said, she is in the wrong and it’s Good that you will be able to find a new Dr. who will be your Guide and Educator not your Dictator. Good Luck!
Great bedside manner & even better attitude! Good riddance. Know that felt like a slap in the face, but who needs someone like her!
Diabetes is all about self-care, self-management. Most healthcare people abhor assertive patients. No doubt I have “noncomplaint” stamped in red on my records because I ask a million questions & question whatever I’m supposed to blindly follow.
[start rant] You know? I’m the type of gal that doesn’t take crap like that lying down. If this Endo is part of a “group” then call and complain. If not… call her office and have your records waiting for you to pick up. (they will probably want some sort of release signed) If they ask why you are leaving… say clearly and Loudly… “This Dr. is a (insert a strong swear word if so inclined) egotistical health care nazi… and I don’t want her “practicing” on me. I pay her to listen… she refuses… so (insert strong verb here ) her and the fake diploma she rode in on… Best advice she ever gave me was “Find another Doctor”… so I am!”
Ok maybe that is a bit over the top… but I am over the top as a matter of course. Doctors are not my favorite people… the arrogant bastages… I’m a firm believer that most of them are corrupt. [/end rant]
Cheri, What? She fired you? I’m agreeing with the others who feel this is your chance to get a better endo. Isn’t it ironic that someone gets labeled noncompliant when they work so hard to manage their diabetes?
I especially like the way you pushed back when she refused to discuss the Levemir. I have to wonder whether she’s getting a little something in the way of freebies from the Lantus folks.
SYLVIA!! This was the first time I smiled and laughed out loud all day…thanks so much for the support.
She’s in her own practice, but I am going to complain to find somewhere to complain!!! Maybe the local AMA, maybe my insurance company - maybe a review site if I can find one.
Absolutely - I wondered the same thing. Why so vehemently opposed to the Levemir? I mean I had already proved myself as a competent and capable patient. Seems a little fishy to me - or maybe her God complex was in full swing.
YOU GUYS - This is the best, most support place - ever!
Thank you, thank you. You know how, when one of your friends says so and so hurt me, you say, “want me to go beat them up?” (even though you’d never do it). But, you know how good that makes you feel? Well, that’s how you all made me feel.
