After having a rough time with my blood sugars last year (and an A1C of about 8.6), I finally took charge and did something about it-bringing it down to 7.5% and finally 7.2%. My nurse was please and I was thrilled, hoping to maintain these A1Cs and bring them down to the 6's if I could. Unfortunately, my A1C from the last 3 months ended up back at 8.2% due to pump blocks (which I mentioned previously). Worse, I am now seeing blood sugars of 300s, 400s, even a 500 here and there. Luckily, they do not last for more than an hour after I correct them, but I cannot lie that I am feeling awfully depressed-after months of good control, my bgs are erratic. I am seeing people with great control and anxious about complications with my control. I'm 22 years old and T1 for about 18 years now. I'm not sure if I should talk to a pump trainer or go back to injections. Feeling awful. Any insight would be appreciated.
I'm really sorry that you'rer having such a tough time. I hated shots so I would first talk to a pump trainer. If you're having a lot of blockages, you may be using the wrong insertion sets. A trainer would be able to see if you're making any mechanical errors, go over your technique and suggest new sets if appropriate. I've been pumping about 5 years and have had my share of B- or C+ sites but I've only had a couple that were really bad. Having them constantly is a sign of either really, really bad luck or more likely a correctible problem. If that doesn't work, you can always go back to shots.
Good Luck,
Maurie
Sorry for the challenges that seem overwhelming. One thought from my perspective would be to look at different infusion sets. Your description sounds like bad sites or kinked infusion tube under the skin.
