So I am switching from a lantus and humalog pen regime to the new animas ping. I currently take 20 units of latus and then 3-4 units per meal. How do you calculate your basal rate? Any insight is appreciated!
I believe when I started I was told to reduce my total basal rate about 25%. So that would give you a total basal of 15 units. Then go ahead and divide it evenly by 24 hours. That's a good starting place. Then see how you do. Over time if you find you are high at certain times on this regimen, say from 7AM to 9AM, then increase the basal starting around 5AM. So say, make a new "time zone" for 5AM to 7AM and increase it by the minimum which is .025. Then see how that goes for a couple days, etc, etc until you start to stabilize. It's a process and it takes time. Just out of curiosity have you met with your trainer yet? What did they suggest? Whatever it is, it's just a starting place (usually conservative, so expect some highs) to then figure out your own basals.
Animas will certainly tell you how they determine your basal rate when they start you on the Ping, If they don't, you should insist that they answer this question and any other questions you may have. They have a formula for determining the starting basal rate, based on your current insulin levels,
Thanks You! I should receive my ping today and start the saline trial. Then waiting for my dr to provide me a starting point for basal. Just wondering how others do it. I honestly find others experiences more helpful sometimes. thanks
