Benefits and Risks of Closed-Loop Insulin Delivery Systems

I recently completed a rather lengthy investigation into the effectiveness of insulin pumps and automated closed-loop systems citing peer-reviewed research published in medical journals. The supporting data and analysis is rather extensive, so I segmented the topic into various categories.

The top-line summary is that, while many people think insulin pumps help make T1D easier to manage and yield healthier outcomes, it’s not that simple. Some subpopulations do well, while others not so much. For most adults, the data suggests there’s “reverse causality,” where most pump users happen to already be healthier than those who don’t use pumps, and for reasons that–only in retrospect–does it seem all too obvious.
