Bernstein question

You would!! Now can you come cart away the pile of leaves that some guy raked off of my lawn for $40, but left in the street?

Bernstein was born in 1934, that make him 76 yrs. old.

There was a guy on another message board that was T1 and did have A1cs in the 4s (AR, do you remember Ron?). He grew up with T1 and had it over 40 years. I know he did lowish carb but not sure that he followed as low as Bernstein suggests. I know that he did go by the theory of small numbers.

Daggerfall, I recall that he ate large steaks? I also recall motorcycles.

Yup, steaks, motorcycles & jumping out of planes.

I had a similar experience as Tom T's with not having as much energy for running, but I did not have the same problem with weight lifting(I generally try to do training that targets multiple muscle groups with one exercise and heavier weights lower reps). I think because they are different exercises though both can be intense. Additionally while running drops my bs, weight lifting tends to increase (during workouts)...

I think too it takes time because I know there is one theory/training method of using low carbs so your body is less likely to crash during runs but in general it takes awhile for one to get the same energy level feeling that they had with more cho..

I think that if you engage in strenuous exercise, you have to rethink the low-carb position, and consider that you're using carbs as a tool.

Those of us who don't engage in strenuous exercise have different needs -- this goes for non-diabetics as well. My exercise is folk-dancing, and while we meet for 2 hours once a week, that hardly qualifies as strenuous exercise, LOL! So I don't need to carb-up for it -- it doesn't really lower my BG, although I do feel tired after 2 hours.

I just don't think there is any one answer that fits everyone's needs, so you need to do what works for you! :-)

There is a small population of Keto-Nutritionists that exist for the Mayo clinic recommended Epilepsy diet. Iā€™m actually in process of trying to track one down to see what they can offer to folks like us. They may be a wonderful resource and clinically accepted - so less trouble getting a referral and what not.

I have no problem with energy and intense workouts even on 20 carbs a day. Once your body gets used to burning fats for energy you have plenty of energy. I always munch on nuts and seeds for energy during a workout. This summer I went through several months of inflammation and muscle aches which I found out was from statins. After that I felt my immune system was compromised and I lost tons of weight and body fat. I started to eat more carbs to put back on some weight and body fat. That is when I found an organic diet that promotes Coconut oil and the use of Eziekel sprouted breads. I figured , what the heck Iā€™ll try it. Believe it or not my bgs began to stabalise and am now seeing below 100 on a regular basis. The diet believes in some of the Berstein principles but alows more natural carbs like fruit and sweet potatoes if you can handle it. It also has you do a metabolic typing test to figure out how your metabolism works. My husband is now on this lifestyle diet and has lost a lot of weight and just did his labs and they came back fantastic. I think a lot of times we pick and choose between different diets to find what works for us individually. Last spring my doc was sure I would have to use insulin, but I am still insulin free for the moment.

Iā€™ve been following a strict low carb diet for about a month now and decided to post an update since I just got my latest A1c results. I am very happy with it, it dropped from 6.5 to 5.7 in just one month. Hopefully it will keep dropping, but Iā€™m still skeptical that it will ever drop below 5. I havenā€™t noticed any significant changes to my insulin use. Even though I am eating fewer carbs, my ratios have decreased. Also, even though my BGs have been very stable during the day, I occasionally wake up very high. Iā€™ve been wary of tweaking my pump basal settings because this doesnā€™t happen every day. I havenā€™t figured out whatā€™s causing it yet. Any advice?

Congrats!

Are you eating more protein now? That could account for your decreased ratios, if everything else is pretty much the same. Can you equate anything from the night before with the occasional morning high? Less sleep, what you ate for dinner? I notice a difference when I eat more protein/fat for dinner.

Thanks Gerry! The only thing Iā€™ve noticed with my morning highs, is that it never happens when I sleep in a little, but it doesnā€™t happen every time I get up early. I wonder if less sleep could be the cause. Also, it doesnā€™t matter what my BG is when I go to bed.

Maybe itā€™s sleep related since it never happens when you sleep in. May also have to do with the quality of sleep So many factors & some that we canā€™t control at allā€“can make a person insane:) Youā€™re doing great. From 6.5 to 5.7 is fabulous!

I believe that Dr. Bernstein also has or had cancer. Related to his ultra-low carb regimen?

and 3 speeding tickets and a limp because of low carb

Thatā€™s odd, I had cancer many years before I started eating low carb. Maybe it was pre-knowledge?

Actually cancer feeds on glucose. If you ever get cancer the Bernstein program might be a good way of fighting the cancer.

Iā€™ve read that. As with most medical conditions, what diminishes one condition may enhance another.

Bernstein has low-carbed for 40+ years, long before his cancer diagnosis. But he is getting up in years, which probably played a part too.

Iā€™ve been reading all the books I can get on low-carb recently. The number of conditions it helps with is surprising. Diabetes, epilepsy, cancer, Iā€™ve read recently about an autoimmune low-carb diet (apparently carbs promote inflammation). Would not be surprised if there are more Iā€™m not familiar with.
