Blood Pressure Medicine

I was looking up info on Zestril and I found out that lisinopril is the generic version of Zestril. And, yes one of the side effects of it is coughing.

Ok, thats for that info. I have had a cough for years and the Doc always states it is because I smoked in the past. I am on Lisinopril even as my BP is always 118/64 with or with out it. He basically used the protect the kidneys line when telling me to take it.

My doc keeps pushing cholesterol meds with me too! My total cholesterol is 186! Not the ideal picture of health, but it’s so much lower than the 200 I had for several years before I really started to eat better. I really don’t want to go on cholesterol meds because, if I get pregnant, they can really harm the fetus. I also don’t like the idea of too many prescriptions. It’s bad enough to have an entire kitchen cabinet and drawer in your refrigerator devoted to them already!

No doc has ever suggested I go on HBP meds. This is probably due to the fact that I’m still relatively young and that I have consistently lower BP (110/60).

I guess I have a little different take on this. I was diagnosed with Type 1 as an adult, years after my kids were born. My BP has always been in the 90-100/60-70 range. Even when I was pregnant my BPs were usually 110/70’s at the very highest, almost always lower.

Both my endo (who also has Type 1) and my PCP recommended lisinopril 2.5mg (smallest dose available). I don’t remember a cough, but did have a low grade headache for about the first 2 weeks-none since. I also experienced a lot of orthostatic hypotension at first, which I now only notice occasionally during exercise. My BPs when measured aren’t really lower than in the past, but that was not the objective in my case.

We all have to make our own decisions. For me, I watched my dad who had Type 1 go through dialysis while trying to continue his full time job, a kidney transplant, the eventual failure of the transplanted kidney, and many other complications of his Type 1. He died way too young and did not have the benefit of all of the newer treatments I have had. I truly do not mean to sound so gloomy, I just wanted to provide a different perspective.

I take 1.25mg of Ramipril. I did a lot of soul searching before I agreed to take this medication. Luckily with such a low dose I don’t get that irritating dry cough.

Did it for about a year, cough and dizziness ensued. I’m done and thinking why take another medicine that could cause other issues.
