My son just did a one hour check after homemade pizza, 228, took a small correction (insulin on board). I suggested a 60% up front and the 40% over an hour and a half. Usually he doesn’t peak so much, maybe it was the 2 chocolate squares too. I buy Trader Joe’s whole wheat pizza dough, use between 3.5oz - 4oz(48carbs) for him, today 4.75oz though (that might be the issue) anyway I roll super thin, use lots of sauce, handful of mozz. and either cand. bacon, leftover chicken that I add a little BBQ sauce to, or all natural pepperoni. I load mine with artichokes, sliced onion and mushrooms. 450 degrees on a pizza stone and its a lovely crispy pizza the whole family loves. I think a short spike is OK, and I only feel the things that should be off limits to him are the things he CAN replace with a better alternative like reg. soda, wht. bread, fast-acting carbs (unless of course he needs them for a low, and in smaller amounts balanced with a meal). Being denied things you love is no fun, the Big D is bad enough. Try to make the pizza work, good luck!
Hey Tyler,
With pizza I calculate my insulin as normal, then split my dose and take half up front and then the second half 60-75min later. I normally come out of it pretty alright
You’ll have to play around a bit to see what works for you, but you can split your dose for a lot of foods. For chinese food for example I take 60% of the total dose I need to cover the meal up front, then 30% 60min later, then the final 10% 90min after that.
If you find the multiple injections to cover a single meal a pain in the butt you should think about getting an insulin pump, they can do what is called a dual wave or combo bolus (depending on manufacturer of the pump) which is essentially the same thing as splitting your bolus up, but with the push of a few buttons instead of the multiple injections.
I took my first shot and checked after 1 hour and I was like 250 then I took the other halfabout 1 1/2 hours (3 PM) after the first and I was fine until just now(6:30 ) and I went low to 60 . Now I am 84 . I dont like feeling like this BLAH maybe I will have pizza once a month LOL
I think I might just stick to my moms homemade pizza on tortillas cause they are very good and we are gonna try Gerri 's recipe
Thanks for all the help
Thanks Pilcrow It didnt seem to go so well this time I posted above what we did ,thanks again
So maybe the next experiment should be 60% up front and 40% after 2 hours. The idea being to lower the first high and not experience the late low. I don’t think you should give up on pizza yet! I just think you need to put in a little more work to find the right ratios. Good luck!
I agree with Natalie, try the 60/40 split next time. Hopefully, you don’t go too low!
Pizza is one of the food that the spike is very long lasting and modern insulins do not last long enough. So yes splitting is good,
Great questions, thanks for asking Tyler! Not neccesarily in reguards to only pizza but lots of other foods that are high in fat and digest slowly. How do you split up the dose on MDIs? I have no idea how long after the first dose to take the other half, there have been many times where this really would have helped me but had no idea how to do it and was scared to mess up and go low.
I took my first shot (1: 15 )and checked after 1 hour and I was like 250 then I took the other half about (3 PM) andBS was 128 at 4:30 I was fine until just now(6:30 ) and I went low to 60 . Now I am 84 (6:45 after a juice ).Started feeling tired and at 8PM checked and I was 250 . Then when I checked before I went to sleep I was 160 (9:30 )
So I went from a BS at 1:15 before pizza of 125 to all of the above
I dont like feeling like this BLAH maybe I will have pizza once a month LOL
Thanks for all your advice & help !
Jenn,
The best way to know when to take the other portion of a split dose is by testing & logging to learn when the rest of the meal typically hits. People have different digestive rates. Once again, there are no rules & it’s trial & error to find patterns. Rapid acting takes around 2 hours to peak to know the full effect of the first shot.
