Carb counting and inuslin to carb ratio

I would appreciate if some one could throw some light on how to do carb counting and figure out the right insulin to card ratio? My meal plan is not the same for most days and hence find it hard to determine the right amount of insulin dose to decide on.
Thanks

First off you need a book or should visit a site such as http://www.calorieking.com/ this has a list of foods, serving sizes and total carbs. For me, my insulin to carb ration is 1:15 so for every 15 grams of carbs I eat I take 1 unit of insulin. Some people may be 1:13 or 1:20 it really depends on your body but 1:15 seems to be fairly popular.
If I eat say 39 grams of carbs I would do this, 39 divided by 15 =2.60 units of insulin. Thankfully my pump does all the math even though it is fairly simple but it also helps prevent insulin stacking from eating through out the day.

Hope this helps,
Dave

Yeah unfortunately we arent doctors here so we cant ell you what do take or not to take. However your doctor should have a plan for this already, you might want to talk with him/her. I’m with Dave at 1:15 but just because its common doesn’t mean its right for you. Please get a game plan with your doctor and go from there. BTW are you on the pump?

I am on the shots.
