Carbs before morning spin-more or less make a difference?

Hi,
Just wondering about this. Do you think the higher amount of carbs + insulin blunts the hormone release of the exercise?

I do a 45-60 min spin class at 6 AM 4x/week.

For at least 2 months now, I’ve been eating 30 gm carbs-oatmeal or high fiber cereal. I’ve gotten to the point where I take 50% bolus (ratio 1:5) + 50% basal reduction (started 1 hr before exercise usually for 30 mins) to get my blood sugar 40 points higher than my starting BG.

Note: AM carbs spike my blood sugar, so I usually bolus upon waking- 5:15ish and then eat closer to 5:45.

This morning, I ate 10 gm of carbs- 1 slice double fiber bread w/ egg better, 1/2 slice cheese. Bolused the same–50% and reduced the basal-but shot up to 250 at the end.

Do you think having more carbs is better for the morning exercise routine for any reason?

I think what you’re seeing is an extension of dawn phenomenon. Exercise without carbs, I find, makes dawn phenomenon even worse.

If I have a sizeable number of carbs (30+ gm) at breakfast my insulin sensitivity is high throughout the morning.

If I skip the carbs, my insulin sensitivity is very low and I will end up taking more insulin than if I didn’t eat the carbs.

Ironic isn’t it? Makes me look very critically on anyone who espouses the simple carbs->insulin->fat flowchart. I’m living proof that it’s a lot more complicated.

Thanks for your response.

I used to have blood glucose spikes after AM exercise all the time. I’ve gone through eating, not eating, eating partial amounts. Surprising, extra carbs does seem to work. I guess if 30 gm of carbs ain’t broke, don’t fix it . . . where’s my oatmeal.

yes carbs are especially important for any cardio exercise. im on lantus so i dont know the pump but my sugar levels are in the lower range when i wake up and thats when i workout .. so for me i take in 20 carbs before i workout with egg whites and then start working out then ck my blood about 30 mins into it sometimes soon depending on how hard i workout . your body uses carbs for energy so if i have just proten in the morning before workout i dont have the energy for a hr workout
