Choosing insulin pump for T2 with UHC

OUCH!

It might be worth checking with Tandem about the cost of the pump. I know that other manufacturers, and equipment suppliers in general, often work with customers when insurance doesn’t pay any part of the equipment cost. You probably already have, but I’d definitely call them and ask for a discount

I hate waiting!

The pump arrived on the 20th and I’ve just been waiting and waiting for my endo to send the pump settings to the Tandem trainer. Boy, everything takes forever when it’s impossible to get a hold of the endo. I keep having to backchannel through the CDE, since she can at least hunt her down at the clinic.

Endo messaged me on the online portal that she faxed the info to my trainer yesterday, but the trainer said that she never got them, so my appointment yesterday was cancelled. Then I rescheduled for today, hoping that the fax would come through, and it still didn’t show so now I’m scheduled for Tuesday night. I’m 99% sure that will be cancelled too…

If I didn’t already know that it would cause a rift with my endo, I would just use what I’ve learned from Think Like a Pancreas and Pumping Insulin and just start without the training!

Been pumping happily for almost a month now! I went back to the gym today for the first time in a year. Set my temp basal to 50% for 2 hours, and ate 10g before a 45 min jog, and blammo stayed 115 the entire time! I am so excited to get back into my favorite things now that I have more control and hopefully can avoid nasty hypos.

Great!! So glad that’s working well for you! I’d been trying things like that with workouts, but lately, I need to plan/respond totally differently - I have to make sure there’s little-to-no bolus insulin on board before a workout, to avoid going low, and bolus after the workout (on a formula that I have yet to figure out!) to stop the big spikes I get approx. one hour after I work out…

But I’m weird

UHC only covers Medtronic unless you are currently on another pump until that warranty runs out. Only will cover supplies until warranty expires. UHC will not cover other company supplies even when you purchase outright. You don’t need the CGM’s for Medtronic to be on their pumps.

I bought my pump outright and they appear to be covering supplies. If they later decide to not cover them, oh well, I’ll deal with that when it happens.
