Combo Bolus on the pump

New to this site and to the pump (only 6 weeks on the pump). Today the family and friends are going out for pizza, my first time since being on the pump to eat this. I know how to do the combo bolus what need suggestions on % and lenght of time. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks…

Hi, Dar. Welome to the world of pumping and to TuDiabetes. It’s a great site and you’ll find lots of friends here and much useful information. Be sure to explore!

Like so many things with diabetes, everyone’s responses to fat will be different. Basically, fat slows your body’s absorption of carbohydrates, so your insulin delivery must be modified. I use a MiniMed 522 pump. When we do pizza (a high-fat meal!),I usually follow the pump’s suggestions for percentages. (It will be percentages for a dual-bolus if your glucose reading is above your target, or simply an interval for a square-wave bolus if you’re at or below target.) I usually use a time interval of 1-1/2 or 2 hours for the highest fat meals, and 30 or 60 minutes for moderately fatty meals.

You will need to experiment to determine what’s right for YOU!

Thanks Gerry~
I received your email after we returned home. I use the “Ping” meter. I did 50% with the meal and the rest in the next four hours. I was at 135 at meal time and 185 two hours later. So I think I should of cut the the four hours to less like you said 2. I have only been on the pump 6 weeks. Thanks again

I usually bolus for 70% of carbs in the beginning, and then the other 30% over the next half hour… that usually covers it, but i’ve also had luck with 100% of the carbs in the beginning, and then covering the fat in the next half hour with another 30% bolus.

This is what I do - 70% up front and 30% oover the next hour… This seem to work for me for pizza - everyone is differnt, however, YDMV.

Thanks Jennifer~
I did 50% and the rest over four hours - which I now know is to long of a spread, Will try the 70%-30% next time. Which will be in a month or so. I thank you for the help.I hope it ok to reply when someone gives me support. And what does YDMV mean?

Your diabetes may vary. What I do may not work for you! If I spread out the second part of the bolus over too long period of time, I tend to go low.

I generally do a 50/50 for two hours
