This has been a great discussion. Love TD!!!
After more thought, I think we've missed some things that should be addressed.
One key element missed is having a large data set of readings to base adjustments to either medication or diet. The more data collected, the more accurate your average will become. Personally, I wait at least 10 days after making an insulin adjustment before making another.
Another element I believe we missed is attitude. Attitudes also can not be understated or under estimated. What do you think is "good enough" or "close enough"? What are you willing do to or how far are you willing to go? What changes are you willing to make? The answers to those questions will determine the results you get.
Yes, it is impossible to have the EXACT same readings long term, BUT very possible to have a consistent (+/- 5 points or less) 7, 14, or 30 day average - which in turn will cause a consistent (+/- 0.2) A1C.
I logged off and went to sleep and came back to see all this feedback !! Really comforting to know there's a whole community out there of people like you, This site is a heaven send !!
Yup think your right ! Will try have a more consistent diet but will have to make contingencies for life !! :)
Nope more like every half an hour - i want to test so like 24 times a day. I know its ridiculous but I had a totally out of nowhere low last week that threw me one ! SInce then i'm just thinking how can i reduce the chance of that happening again.
excellent comments, thoughts and suggestions. I agree.
I pretty much ate the same meals practically every day at first. I already had a bunch of food allergies, so when the T1 diagnosis came in, I was a bit freaked out that food was trying to kill me in some form or another. A bit of an exaggeration, but not by much.... But it was tough at first finding things that had nutritional info, were healthy, and that I wasn't allergic to all at the same time, so I stuck to them. Found that my numbers still varied greatly day to day and meal to meal despite that. Maybe it's hormones or a sputtering pancreas that causes the lack of consistency. Doubt we'll ever know for sure.
i have done this myself. unfortunately, it seems impossible no matter how "perfectly" you manage to keep everything the same. even if everything (and i mean EVERYTHING) the same
(exercise, food, meal times, other medications, even ADVIL for a headache, as well as your sleep, which i have no idea how anyone could manage that) for this to work.
the best i have ever gotten is an education on how my body reacts for certain types of food, how excersize effects my need for insulin, perhaps my carb to insulin ratios, what types of food i can "get away" with (w/out a bolus) and which foods i absolutly cannot mannage no matter what i try.
best of luck. its always worth a try so long as making certain you arent doing anything dangerous. and always be wiling to put the experiement aside if you have an unhealthy reaction.
