Caleb is off to Washington DC bright and early this morning.
He’ll be back Thursday night - so three days and two nights. Fingers and toes are crossed. He went for a two day, one night trip to Philly last year. That went ok. Not amazing, but decent considering he was on his own for an overnight of that nature for the first time. I am more optimistic about this year, yet I’m worried too optimistic as diabetes always seems to have its own plans which foil ours.
Caleb will be independent. We’ve already been in touch and troubleshooting a minor technical issue, but there is no one on the trip in charge of his care. The principal is his chaperone, and he’s trained in emergency care, and is on call overnight if I need him to get into Caleb’s room. But there is no one trained in the details of diabetes with him.
I marveled at the small pile of clothes and toiletries he needed, and how all the supplies and backup and emergency equipment took up more space. I really don’t know how it took so much time, but I spent a good couple of hours collecting and organizing all his supplies to be sure he had everything, yet wasn’t overburdened with stuff.
He is Looping, and hopefully that will help soften the rough edges that activity and carb guessing produce. We’ve also pretended he was away the last couple of nights and he set an alarm to wake up at 3am to check on his bg. Luckily, no action was needed - thanks to Loop. We even mimicked his meal for this evening last night so we were better prepared for tonight with an insulin dosing plan.
So, I’m feeling pretty good about this. But, as I said, diabetes always has other things in mind for us and I am bracing (on the brink of losing my mind) at the thought of the many things that can go wrong.
