Diabetes-related Airport/Airline Experiences, anyone?

In about 45 years of travelling, even flying with early pumps in the mid-1980s, I’ve never had a problem – except once. About five years ago, I was departing from Florence, Italy, and something in my shoulder bag caught security’s attention. I was on MDI at the time, so I can’t imagine what looked unusual. One of the security guys said something but my mind was elsewhere and I moved to pick up my bag. My partner, behind me, called out my name in a worried tone, and I looked up to see two Italian police officers pointing Beretta submachine guns at me. I’ve often thought that in this day and age I no longer need to travel with a letter from my endo about having Type 1 and needing to carry needles etc., but I was sure glad I had it that day!
