Dr Sandra Cabots book:
The “Truth About Cholesterol” is a good read. Basically tells you to go low carb and eliminate many foods to lower cholesterol without medicines. Statins, of course are the alternative.
I was hoping that Holger would have commented but Thanks John for counter-acting Peskin’s video with Weston A. Price’s article. Granted, there are way too many shab’s on the net giving their uncertified opinions but Scott’s video Really blew me out of the water. Although I am not familiar with the Weston A. Price People, it at least balances out things to near normal for me.
I do not eat fish or seafood(all of my Life) of any kind except for the occasional tuna sandwich or trout caught at the lake but I do take my cod liver oil capsules every day since I was 6.
I do not like eggs except when I get the yearly craving. Then I have 4 meals of them in a row, 2 each a day.
I am usually a night Person since about Gr. 6 or 7(although I usually function okay during the day if severe RA isn’t butting in) so I rarely get sunshine on me except for the intended sun tan in the summer. But yet, my tests are all Good so I think Peskin’s opinion is maybe only 1/3rd correct.
I do not think that Statins are required for all Diabetics but I do think that some need them depending on their Lifestyle, Syndrome X and Family history.
Michael …please explain to me before I get to read Sandra’s book , I consider myself a healthy carb eater , vegies, fruits ( apples with peel on , spuds with the skin on , high fibered stuff etc. etc ) and not LOW carb , regular exercise ,NO doughnuts /fast foods/ if cookies…then plain ones, ie triglycerides at a min. , where do I fit into the equation ??
Sorry I didn’t see this until today. The doc (drug pusher) didn’t even do bloodwork to confirm my levels - her latest bloodwork on me was a year old and over the year (from the time the bloodwork was done) I had lost 60 pounds. The new doc did bloodwork immediately before verifying that I didn’t need to go on the med. I’ve had my new doc since last summer and last summer I went through meds, flushing down toilet old meds and gave empty containers to the school nurse so that she could give it to her friend who needed empty pill bottles.
I’m 32 and have been on 40mg Simvador for about 5 years. I’ve never had any problems with it regarding bloods or muscle cramps but I was advised to also take Q10 with it (available in Boots, Superdrug or any major Supermarket). I think I was advised to take the Simvador as it weakens the connective tissue between your joints but its also good for your skin so I’m not complaining! My cholesterol level runs around 4 (UK) which is pretty damn good but I also watch what I eat.
My doc recommended them for me once and I laughed at him. My total chol was 134 at the time (the highest it has ever been was 164) and my average bp is about 90/60. I told him when they breech the recommended levels I would consider them. But since I am vegan now I have started taking flax oil capsuls everyday because I feel I need more healthy fats in my diet. I think if you actually need them take them, but if they just want them for prevention I’d probably try a more natural approach to keeping lower cholesterol and inflammation. just my 2 cents.
To throw another side effect in to the mix- I have been having neuropathy in one leg (outer thigh area), and it seems to have started since I began Lipitor 10mg daily about a month ago. I’m 26 and haven’t had this neuropathy issue since I was about 20 (and was not in such great control). Has anyone else had a neuropathy flare up using statins?
It’s enough to make me stop them altogether… my Endo wants my on statins and will soon add blood pressure medicine, even though I’ve always had good blood pressure. I really don’t like the idea of being on all these pills with side effects at 26, but I understand the prevention incentive.
My doctor wants to put me on this Zocor too! I refuse to take it Kathyann… but I would be interested in learning how it works with you if you’ld let me know please… My LDL is 102 and falling… I fall within the acceptable range of the lab, so I don’t see that it would do me any good at all. I think I might try that Omega 3 too!
I can’t believe my doctor… she says I should consider taking it and then she says she’s ordered it from the pharmasy for me… well I have refused to take statins many times before and this time is no different. Doctors… I’m sure that they just like to get you to pay out more money sometimes.
Chris, what level are your LDL’s? My doctor is advising me the same thing… but I keep refusing… my levels are at 102 and falling… Over the past few months I have had extreme stress and my blood sugars are all over the place, I’m only now getting them back under control. I also have a thyroid problem and that also had got out of sync which was affecting by blood sugars too.
If your LDL comes into the range which is acceptable by the lab results, I don’t see any need to take Statins… Coming from the UK, you will get them free on the NHS, but here in the USA we pay for them partly through insurance (if we have it) and partly ourselves. I believe that if something isn’t needed, then don’t take it… Why should you risk your health taking something that isn’t needed for a problem that you may never get if you already have good LDL’s?
I’m around 6.1 for my A1C, so I am feeling pretty sure it’s Lipitor related…wondering if all statins have similar side effects. I’m definitely going to ask my doc, but don’t have another appointment till the end of March. Hmmf.
I’m on lovastatin right now. I have a family history of high cholesterol, no matter what we do outside of medication, it stays high. I’ve been on mine for nearly a year, and its still high, yet coming down.
I was once on simvastatin, but it gave me insomnia, so I switched. So far, no insomnia issues.
Lots of debate about this very subject recently, I saw Kelly put some links up.
I don’t have the paperwork on me but i know my cholesterol was not within the ideal range…but, even if it was my doctor said she wants all her type 1’s on statins and blood pressure meds to prevent heart and kidney complications.
Hi Denise, Thanks for your input. My ldl is slightly over at 3.3 (unsure if measured the same in u.s). Its diff to make decision although like you feel the risks maybe are not worth taking for something that at present isnt a big problem even though at 40 i am officially now in high risk of heart attack group. How does Diabetes affect your other conditions and vice versa?
