Afternoon all. I'm currently using Lantus and Novolog and have my BS under pretty good control. I've been losing weight and have never felt better. I have noticed the following though; I currently take 55 units of Lantus at 7pm each evening. In the morning when I wake up (6am) I am usually around 85-100. If I wake up and don't eat or drink anything, around 11am, by blood sugar will drop into the 60s. Obviosuly I can easily rectify this, but I am not sure if I need to adjust my basal insulin.
You might try playing with the timing of it, or splitting the dose into two rather than changing the amount.
I used to split the dose and that really didnt do anything for me. I was actually taking 60 units split and my numbers were terrible.
Hmm. Unfortunately what you are talking about, lower basal needs at a particular time of day is hard to manage on MDI. Your basal should keep you steady without the need to eat, but that can be easier said than done. If the dip is always at the same time, I'd try taking it at different times, just experiment. I still think a split dose might work but you would have to play with the times there too. Finally, some people have better experience with levemir than lantus which is another option.
I'll just make sure I eat breakfast...better for me not to skip it :)
Sounds like an easy solution which is generally good for you anyway!
