Do you run marathons, or want to? Introduce yourself here!

There’s a lot of useful information here! I have picked up lots of tips and ideas from reading back through the main thread. Although, if I looked back at what I was doing in 2011 and what I’m doing now, it would probably be different?

who is doing philly (or bucks county) marathon this weekend? anyone going to IMAZ?

amazing job jay! is that a BQ?

Great time, Jay!

Joe, I'll be running Philly this weekend. You?

nah doing bucks county but kicking myself for all the great stuff I will be missing with the you guys downtown.

You're welcome to join us Saturday! email me if you want details!

thanks but have the dread family conflicts on Saturday. meh

Hi everybody i'm new to this group. I've run many 1/2 marathons but plan on running a full marathon for my 50th next year. I'd love any pointers for a full marathon as a T1 with a pump.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Alan (Montreal)

Awesome job, Jay!
Wishing everyone a great weekend in PA.

Cheers all,

5:10 @ the bucks county marathon 11/17. very flat performance sunday. nothing hurt but legs were trashed after six miles. I didn't but enough training for my goal time but thought it would go better than this. hardest finish in recent memory but am very proud of that finishers medal

Congratulations on your marathon, Joe.
And many is the time I wish I could've said, "nothing hurt..."
That's a good day.

So Philly is done and dusted. Went through the first half in 1:41 feeling relaxed and easy, then around mile 15 or so started getting terrible calf cramps. I've never had cramps before, so I'm still not certain what the cause was, but after switching to Gatorade Endurance I was able to jog the last 4 miles without further issue unless I pushed the pace. Finished a frustrating 4:12. One of these days I'll get one right!

tough day Stephen but you did great considering what you were up against.

Congrats, Stephen. I share your pain, did the MCM on 10/25/13 and at about mile 20, my legs felt like weights. Continued the last 6 miles at a run/walk to finish in 4:48. Disappointed by the breakdown, was using chocalet 9 as a gel and had some gatorade early on, any one have any suggestions to avoid future occurrence?

Hey guys....long time DOC member here, new TuD poster :) Found this group at the suggestion of Mike/acidrock. I'd love to hear from any of you about your experience with BGs going high during a race. My marathon/long run BGs are fine, but for shorter races the spikes are getting more and more extreme. This weekend I ran a 10K.....15 minutes before the start I was 185, and after finishing it in 50 minutes I was 425 (I s#@& you not). Experience, thoughts, advice, commiseration??

Hi Caroline,

Nothing that severe, but I did run a 10K that sent me on a steep gain about 20 minutes after I was done. I chalk it up to your body continuing to raid your glycogen stores as your muscles stop burning fuel because you're done exercising. Are you on a pump, and do you suspend insulin delivery for races? I've found that that exacerbates the issue, so keep at least some insulin going in throughout the race.

Generally, once I hit 7 miles or so, the dropoff in BG is pretty abrupt and significant, and I don't go above the normal range after finishing up at that point.

Thanks DEA! I am a former pumper, have been back on MDI for 2.5 years now. I split my Levemir dose and took my normal dose the night before the race since it was so short. I usually do this for every run shorter than 16-17 miles.

Do you find that you have that same 7-mile dropoff on race day, or just during training runs?

I get pretty spiky with pre-race jitters or adrenaline, although not up to the 400s. I try to eat 2+ hours before the run, depending on what time I get up (sometimes jitters will get me up early, which is sort of handy...) to give myself time to get most of the bolus out. If my BG is up, I will usually correct but, following a chart in Think Like a Pancreas, I'll take 1/3 of the bolus, including if I'm running and see my BG drifting up on my CGM. It might be less convenient with shots although really, in long runs people are pausing and walking all through many long distance events so I don't think it's a huge deal to pull over, test and shoot if you felt like it would help. My line in this pic is from the Chicago Marathon in 2012 and you can see the little black blocks at the bottom where I'd bolused when it was running up. I saw a 110 on the CGM about the time of the first Gatorade stop and decided to have a snort and it rode up until maybe mile 18ish or so so I drank water for most of the race. I don't suspend. When I run up, I'll to to 100% of the basal rate until it comes down and correct with the 1/3 corrections, using the CGM figure (I usually try to ensure good telemetry on the CGM by racing on day 2 or 3...) to fix it. If I'm not high, I will run at 50-75% if it's > 5 miles and have some Gatorade for fuel. I know lots of people are not fans of Gatorade but it's handy as I buy the powder and mix it,

The dropoff around the 7-mile mark is pretty consistent. One other thing I forgot to mention is that my digestive system pretty much shuts down while running, so if I do ingest anything more complex than Honey Stingers, it isn't going to hit my system until after I stop running, so I'd expect to see anything like that (like, say, an Pop-tart eaten immediately before I start) not hit my system until after I was done running. This is why I, like acidrock23, try to eat 1.5-2 hours before I start to have any hope of the food actually working as fuel. That might just be me, though I know the digestive process at least slows during exercise.

Hello my homeboys and girls!! I'm stoked to hear all your great running experiences :) I just ran the Men's Health Urbanathlon in San Francisco. That was so fun, i totally recommend any of those races. I was able to get the new CGM enlite right before race day. Dear sweet baby Jesus it kicks some major booty. It is so quick and pain free. I honestly felt lucky to get it!
