Whether you are a lab mouse or a human, Type 1 diabetes is a cruel disease, because the body does not produce enough of the hormone insulin to turn food into energy. But, there is new hope. Researchers at Massachusetts General have found a way to cure mice of the disease, and they are focused on helping humans.

Dr. Faustman’s research team found that removing disease-causing T cells amazing allowed the mice to regenerate good cells and cured autoimmune illnesses, like Type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Faustman presented her groundbreaking research to the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine. She has now begun human clinical trials – the possibility of a cure for Type 1 diabetes is electrifying New England’s medical community.

More than 500 of the patients at the Dimock Center in Boston are diabetic. The health center is so focused on eliminating the disease that it has launched a three-year diabetes healthy life initiative.
