DUI or Hypoglycemia

Opps I mean I HAVE been stopped (who in Chicago hasn’t right??)

Tom understand I am sorry for what happen. I did not get behind the wheel hypo, I was in range when I got behind the wheel I became hypo while driving. There is a difference between the two. I can’t afford my CGM now so I test and I test before I drive. This is why this scared me I had tested and was good then this massive low from nowhere. I do understand that this could have been worse and I thank God that it wasn’t. One thing I can say is that I did thank the officer for stoping me if he had not who knows what could have happen. But Tom yes I am sorry for what happen.

At the risk of being a make-lemonade-out-of-lemons person, could this not be used as a rationale for getting an insurer to cough up a CGM? Sudden, inexplicable hypos is EXACTLY what CGM was invented to prevent. I’m just sayin’…

PS I would definitely file a complaint with the PD, for all the good it will do you. Just so it’s on the record.

You may consider finding out if a local diabetes association has an education program for police. Does anyone come into the police station to give a talk about how to tell the difference between a drunk and a hypoglycemic diabetic? If so, you may want to share your experience. Then I would write the police station / file a complaint explaining how dangerous it was for them to take this valuable time away from the urgent situation. Remember, if the person / police officer is not diabetic or knows one very well, they do NOT know how important this is. Also, they come across the lowest of the low (people wise) everyday of their lives on the job. They are used to be told half truths, no truths etc.
Non diabetes don’t know what this is like - something that we ALL know here. That doesn’t exempt the police for what they did but in part may give a clue of why they were idiots.

South Dakota had a governor who was a diabetic, while in office he set up many programs for our state’s diabetics.
He was the spokesman for SD Diabetic Association…very good …but he was a jerk. On a trip across the state, he failed to test, to eat, to monitor himself, and went low…in the meantime, he ran a stop sign and killed a man who was in the right away on a motorcycle. Although they didn’t make a big deal out of his diabetes, he used it for his defense and only did 100 days in jail, lost his SD attorney priviledges and some other items. Since then, pd have been looking for diabetics and giving them the same run around. Unfortunately, John, because of the DUI’s in our country, PD look for drunks driving under the influence, not diabetics experiencing lows.and driving. It’s the facts. So your gf got the brunt of it, as you did. I agree you should do at least two things, talk to the man in charge, captain, whatever. And then make sure that they PD in your area have an educational session on the differences between a diabetic and a DUI. This is something that happens many times too often.

You might get some help with this police officer by contacting the State of Illinois Deaf and Hard of hearing commission. I am deaf myself so I know some cops can be arses when it comes to communicating with them

First of all, it was right she got pulled over. but i agree that the officer should have listened.

Now, put yourself in the officers shoes. You’re driving and the driver in front of you is swerving and not driving “correctly.” As an officer, would your first thought be “oh this person must be a diabetic!” a or that the person is drunk. i go everyday thinking that a person driving erratically is drunk.

I, myself work at a police department. I am not an officer, but i do understand why they work, the way they do.
A while back i was invited to a course on emotional survival for police officers, and i really got an inside look on the way they act.
Yes officers are jerks, bastards, whatever you wanna call them. but understand this… officers get front row seats to the most unimaginable things you can think off. when you hear about destruction, abuse, murders who is the first to know about it? officers. they get a firsthand look at the worst of the worst. now, try looking at that all day long and deal with what you think is a drunk driver. most of whom (actual drunks) give officers a very difficult time. and because they deal with the worst, they have to keep their guard up and be prepared for the worse.
so again. it was right that she got pulled over and i’m glad no one got hurt especially herself. but you have to look at it from an officers perspective.

oh and i mean no offense to anyone i’m not saying this in a rude way. but watch what you say about officers. i get that alot where i work. people i talk to go on about how they hate cops and they’re just jerks with an easy job cause they can be rude to people. news flash. it is not an easy job. it’s more difficult than you can imagine. then and think about ragging on them when you need an officers help. to often i realize people running to our station for help were people whom i heard saying the most horrible things about officers.
sorry i just had to get that off my chest…

Ashley as everyone here has already agreed on she should have been pulled over. That was not the point of this blog, it was the actions taken toward Missy by one of the officers.

Yes the police see the worse of the worse and for the most part people do not tell them the truth or even cooperate with them so they have to be prepared for the worse and their guard has to be up. That is for their protection. I would not want to be a police officer it is a hard job it is not easy.

But when you have a person who is cooperating with an officer and someone has informed him that the person is in need of medical assistance that officer should listen and not refused that assistance.

I have a lot of respect for the police but one officer can make all of them look bad. I am sure you can agree with that Ashley.

This one officer has pulled Missy’s car over three times today alone and she was not even in the car two of the times and was not driving either. He has it out for her. He knows that she can not hear him when he talks to her so he talks without facing her so she can read his lips. There is a code on her drivers lic so any police that looks at her lic will know that she is deaf so he has no excuse for not knowing. She does not have any problems with any of the other officers only this one.

John, what action is Missy’s lawyer taking regarding this officer? It seems to me if complaints are filed and the police department isn’t doing anything about it, there has to be someone higher up.

Always check your BG Before you start the engine!

Devon, not to sound funny but the complaints have fallen on deaf ears because they came from “regular people” her lawyer said so the police was not going to do nothing. But now that it is coming form a lawyer they are looking into it. As far as what actions the lawyer is taking I am not sure I was not with her when they meet yesterday. But from what my brother told me he wants someone with her anytime she is driving so if that officer pulls her over there is someone else there as proof of what happens.

Got a T.R.O. against the officer today, he is now stalking her. The lawyer said that he is working on trying to have him suspended during his investigation, and he has to take some classes that the State of Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission has to help him be able to deal with the deaf and hard of hearing that he will see on his job. This is what is happening so far.

TRO–great!

Just got off the phone with the lawyer. Missy’s stalking cop has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. He has finished his classes that the State of Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission had.He also has to meet with a CDE to be educated on low/high bgs. A win on our side for now.

Congrats! What an encouraging outcome!

Just a quick update for everyone. It is all over now. Missy’s stalker cop is out of a job! They decided to let him go. This was due to all the things that he was found guilty of doing to Missy and the other deaf. Also this was not the first time that he was involved in these kind of actions. This is good for all.

Wonderful news! Thanks for the update. People can make a difference when they stand up against an injustice. Hugs to you & Missy.

Great news John. I hope the cop doesn’t get all revengey on you guys, though. Although Missy said she was now down in Rockford so hopefully far away from the copper.

Kimberly I hope the cop doesn’t either. Yes we just moved to Rockford. We are still unpacking. Missy needed to put some space between her and someone else so we move to Rockford.
