Hey guys, I've been on a new insulin pump so my blood sugars are actually really good (fasting below 90 and after eating typically below 140), so my concern is this... I'm going to go hiking up to some waterfalls next weekend and I'm concerned I'll drop too low and won't feel it because I'm not exactly feeling my lows anymore. What BG do you guys start your hikes out with and try to maintain? This hike is just 4 mile round trip and just a 500 foot incline in the last quarter mile or less. Mostly switchbacks :)
Thanks
I’m on mdi so I can’t advise specifically, but it depends on a couple of things… First being, how fit are you? Is this going to be a stretch or a walk in the park? Your liver will dump glucose if you’re working hard, and not do too much if this is easy. If I’m hiking a challenging hike, I drop my basal. Make sure you take plenty of water, and glucose tabs (due to the precision of predicted bg rise), if it’s challenging, sometimes you will need to bolus to correct the high. Elevation can effect bg too, I find I need less insulin > 6k ft, It’s trial and error as you likely know. Have fun!
