Galvus met

Doctor add galvus met to my medication - anyone is using this new drug can kindly tells me if it brings better results or no, also doctor still keeps me on Amaril but less dose (2 instead of 4) any advise

The best I can tell Galvus Met is metformin + Vildagliptin. Vildagliptin is a DPP4 inhibitor of the same class as Januvia and Onglyza. Vildagliptin is not available in the US and the application to the FDA for approval in the US has been withdrawn by Novartis. I can’t tell you more.

Thanks a lot BSC but do u mean it may be risky or what, do u have any idea why application was withdrawn.

from wiki

Novartis has since withdrawn its intent to submit vildagliptin to the FDA, as of July 2008.[4] The Food and Drug Administration had demanded additional clinical data before it could approve vildagliptin including extra evidence that skin lesions and kidney impairment seen during an early study on animals have not occurred in human trials.

I don’t consider this issue a particular risk, only that the FDA asked for more studies which will take time and money. I would pay more attention to the concerns expressed by Jenny Ruhl at (http://diabetesupdate.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html). She has concerns about Januvia (sitagliptin), Onglyza (saxagliptin) and presumably Vildagliptin which are all in the same class.

I don’t have any personal knowledge or experience with the effectiveness. Just because there are risks taking a medication does not mean you should avoid it. You need to balance the risks against the potential benefits.

I do thank you a lot and valuable information, but here is teh situation, I used to take 3 mg amaril with 2500 mg glucophage and 20 u lantus during the daybut even though any carb like bread, pasta, rice raise me very high to 300 and above, I went to this Dr and he shifted me to 2 mg Amaril instead of 3 and 2 tablets galvusmet (1000/500) and levemir 20, since then I have high BG at morning (around 250) and after noon until evening getting better around 140 - 160 - every dr I go to is trying with me tablets although I feel that I need bolus insulin to control myself, I am very confused as most of Dr do not talk anymore on importance of low carb or exercise, they just giv tablets and avoid bolus insulin, I really want to control my BG but I can not —to be honest I eat about half plate of rice and 2 Whole wheat beta breads and some two pears or apples a day as a apparent Carb, any one can help me with some instruction if the medication I take is Ok or not and what to do in food issue to get optimum control.

I think you are right, it can be very hard to work with doctors, many want you to just take pills and go on with life as though you do not have diabetes. But you have diabetes. Many here have found a low carb diet has been very helpful. Two books I would recommend are the new Atkins Diet book (http://www.amazon.com/New-Atkins-You-Ultimate-Shedding/dp/1439190275) and Dr. Bernsteins Diabetes Solution (http://www.amazon.com/Dr-Bernsteins-Diabetes-Solution-Achieving/dp/0316167169/). And you are right, if you eat a half plate of rice it can be very hard to control your blood sugar and diet and exercise are very important.

Let me suggest this. You posted a new discussion of galvus met, which few people know about. Instead, why don’t you post another message introducing yourself, describe your journey as a diabetic, when were you diagnosed, how well it has gone, and what your worries are. And simply ask for suggestions. People here are very helpful.

You are a very supporting , Thank you, matter of fact I followed jenny link that you sent me earlier and I sent her my story asking for help and yes I will post now again in TU diabetes–Thank you very much.
