Gene therapies are a long way as of now. A lot of science and technology, followed by clinical proof needs to be uncovered before we can be certain that treatment is available. And by long way, of course I mean it could still happen within a decade. After all, medical technologies tend to surprise us all the time with sudden alacrity. However gradual or exponential medical progress is, it is good to know that there is an end at sight for Diabetes in gene therapy.

Researchers at Baylor College have found that injecting a specific gene called neurogenin3 into the liver of mice, promoted insulin production, as a temporary effect. However, it appears to prompt cells that produce more insulin.

This discovery is quite promising. It is possible to harness the liver and look past the pancreas. It is also possible to treat diabetes type 1 with gene therapy.

Of course, there is a long way to go from lab rats to treatment, but there is hope…
