Had first endo appointment yesterday!

Ya I dunno I thought she was crazy when she said that 19.2 was OK. Lol and yes I’m 24. I’m for sure going to start counting my carbs and maybe get a book on that and diabetes just to know more ya know? You can never have too much knowledge! Yes I’m normal weight:) I’m 24 and 5 feet tall and weigh 117 last time I checked I know I’ve lost a bit tho so maybe 115 ish…I’m a competitive cheerleader so I stretch and condition often and I go to the gym. I dunno how my cholesterol is it wasn’t done in my recent bloodwork.

Going to ask my type 1 friend if he can get me in with his Endo

I have tingling and numbness in my feet but that’s apparently from my low B12 and I’ve had nerve probs from my lower back down my sciatic nerve to my knees for yearssss and take lyrica for it when it’s really bad.

Thanks for sharing, pancreaswanted! The tingling goes up to right below my calf in one of my legs. It often feels like the front of my shin is going numb. I'm also having my B12 level checked b/c I know a deficiency can cause tingling/numbness, too. I eat lots of eggs and meat, so a B12 deficiency seems unlikely, but I might have celiac disease, so that would explain a deficiency if malabsorption is an issue.

Glad to hear those symptoms went away for you once you were on insulin!

Wow, Paul. You are really sensitive to carbs. It still takes quite a bit to spike me up. I'm hoping your new specialist will at least *consider* LADA and just do the dang testing to know for sure! Please keep us posted! :)

You might want to try pre-bolusing if you are spiking that early. Most of us find we need to bolus 15-20 minutes before eating to give the insulin time to work.

Thanks again for all the great info., Melitta! Very interesting that Frederick Allen kept T1s alive for 5 yrs. via strict diet before insulin came along! You're so right, too--time to insulin treatment does not depend on the disease process, but on the Dr.'s judgment.

Unbelievable that knowledge and treatment of LADA is so behind in the U.S.! I just don't understand it! Especially, for endocrinologists whose specialty (or one of their few specialties) is diabetes! It only took me a short time to hear about LADA and learn quite a bit about it. There are plenty of journal articles about it--a quick Google search will pull up plenty!

I can't tell you how relieved I was to hear my endo mention LADA before I did! I'm very fortunate that I live in Baltimore where we have some of the best healthcare in the country.

I'm going to check out the ActionLADA website. Thanks again! :)

Ooh...that's good you have a T1 friend who can recommend someone! You could also call your Dr.'s office and ask if they can send you copies of your past labs/bloodwork (even if it was awhile back) so you can see what your blood lipid profile looks like.

The fact that you are so active, thin, and 24 and having elevated BG, makes total sense for having antibodies checked. :)

Alicia, Are you vegetarian? I know many vegetarians are low in B12. Do you get shots or take supplements?

Zoe, I'm not on insulin (yet!). If I come back positive for antibodies, they will start me on insulin and I will take your advice to heart. Thanks! :)

Oops, sorry, kitty, I tend to forget that not everyone is on insulin!

I was a vegetarian and started eating some meats again but not red meats. My doctor thinks it's either because of my lack of b12 in my diet or that my body has an issue absorbing the B12. I started on B12 shots yesterday. I have to get them once a month. My iron was a bit low but she said nothing crazy and I could take iron *if* I wanted but that it wasn't really needed because women are always a bit lower. The B12 she was concerned about because it was SO low (72 and should be at 220) but she wasn't at really concerned about the BG readings I've been getting post meals.. (is the abreviation pp?). I sent my friend a text asking about the endo so hoping he gets back to me soon!
