I was at my doctor’s office yesterday and when we took my blood pressure it was 130. My A1C is 6.6. I have only had diabetes for 3 years so far so I was really happy when he told me my A1C but then the blood pressure number came up. Before the visit I had been celebrating with old friends and hadn’t had much sleep for 4 nights was partying straight and before the visit I had just been to the dentist to get part of my implant in for my tooth. Could that have possibly caused it to spike up a bit just temp from all the extra stresses? He didn’t really stress on the number he just told me to check my blood pressure like at the gym and see if it goes down? He did not prescribe me any medications. I am very worrried and confused
Not a problem. Sit quietly, relax for about 5 - 10 minutes, then take your reading. Lot’s of things can cause transient rises in BP and measuring once while at the Docs office is one of those things that can cause a spike.
I had high readings for consecutive visits and decided to get my own meter. 130 t0 145 over 85-75 at the office. 105/65 relaxing at home.
Your systolic number was 130…what was your diastolic number? Blood pressure is usually two numbers, like 120/80. In any case, you need not worry about your blood pressure at your age unless it is really, really high when measured at any time during the day and night.
Your A1c is not affected by the previous 4 days of events because it is an average value for the previous 120 days or so and you can rest assured that there has been no spike in your A1c value as a result.
Try to maintain normal blood sugars with low carb diet and exercise, along with your insulin basal and bolus. Take plenty of vitamin D3 supplements and fish oil supplements. Try to avoid all other medications unless your doctor absolutely demands it…never try to suggest to your doctor that you would want to be on medication by yourself because it would likely be the effect of drug advertisements on tv, radio and internet that is influencing you.
Be healthy and be happy. Don’t worry too much.
Don’t worry with that number. My blood pressure is alway higher in the doctor’s office then at home. In the doctor’s office, your walk a lot to go there and if the doctor take your blood pressure in the first minutes your are in, it will be higher. If he take it in the end, it will be lower. Stress and activity raise blood pressure.
Do what he told you, take you blood pressure at home when you are sit after 10 or 15 minutes. It will be the real reference.
Thank you for your quick responses I really appreciate it
1 reading isnt’ bad. could be a one time blip
Easyily could have been stress. My wifes is always higher at the doctors due to her not liking to go there. My doctor did warn me about useing the machines at gyms and stores ect. Alot of time they are not calibrated and will give false readings. I was useing one and couln’t figre why her and my readings were so diffrent. take care Bruce
If you buy your own blood pressure meter, you can take it with you to the doctor’s office so they can see how it compares to their bp meter. Keep a log of the readings to show them.
I agree with everyone, i wouldn’t worry about the one-time reading. Alot of docs will tell you that patients blood pressure has a tendency to be high on visits as the stress of being at the doctor, dealing with traffic to get there etc will cause a rise. for example, at home relaxing my BP will be 117/72, 20 minutes after a workout 125/75 and when i go to the doctor it will be 135/79 (checked manually at both locations). Stress also has a tendency to raise the systolic number more than the diastolic. I wouldn’t worry unless its really high, or the 2 numbers are oddly close together.
I agree with everyone here, NOT a problem.
I finally got my doctors nurses to take a second BP reading at the END of my appointment after I’ve had a chance to calm down a bit.
Fair Winds,
Mike
Nothing to worry about. BP can change from one minute to the next. My mother has high BP & I’ve seen her get vastly different readings 5 minutes apart.
Stress definitely sends it higher, or if you’ve eaten a lot of salty food. You shouldn’t be talking when BP is being taken, but the nurse at my doctor’s office always asks me questions when doing this:)
I also take adderell for adhd. I have only have been taking it for a year. I read somewhere that it can cause high blood pressure. Do you think I could reverse this if I stop talking the medication or if I do end up having it for life? It seems to be a little higher after talking my meds. I eat very healthy and exercise 4 times a week. I live in Santa Barbara and ride my bike everywhere. Has anyone else experienced this problem with adhd meds?
I think you should talk to your doctor before stopping the meds. Maybe he could give you another meds if this one is the problem.
