So sorry that you had to go through all this, that is appalling and the response you received is even worse! I am an RN and feel ashamed when I hear of other health professionals behaving like such prats.
So glad that you have filed a complaint. I think how you were treated is a very big deal. It was horrible and it put your life in danger.
I think the nurse and the doctor on call should be reprimanded at the very least.
This should be the basis of a renewed complaint to the hospital administration AND the state medical board. This is a completely unprofessional response to a completely legitimate question of care (or lack of care).
Since I wasnât there, I can only speculate that the nurse had no orders to give you insulin of any kind, therefore you were going to get turned down.
The response of this doctor is far more damning, IMO and should be pursued vigorously.
Anytime I have been in the hospital for any period of time the first thing I tell my doctor is âI would like to take care of my insulin and blood sugars. I will not take any insulin without a nurse knowing. My blood sugars will be monitored more frequentlyâ. I ask them to write in their orders that the âpatient will monitor blood sugar levels and self administer insulin with a nurse presentâ.
I also let the doctor know my past A1C levels to let him know that I take care of myself and am a concerned and educated patient.
Fortunately Iâve never had an issue with any doctor denying me the opportunity to take care of my own diabetes.
Fixed it for you -

I think it is especially important that we are in charge of managing our T1D (as long as we are conscious) because we will check bg a lot more often than their typical 4 - 6 times a day. Unfortunately my health plan requires that I use their hospital, and their endo dept has a policy of surrender your pump, CGM and meter. Obviously I will not submit to being admitted.
I was at my Cardiologist an started having chest pain i was sent to the local ER here in town and later I was transported to the Hospital in Midwest City Oklahoma I was direct admit to the hospital instead of going through the ER. While I was in the Hospital for several days by blood sugar was never checked and no insulin was ever given, Another time I was transported to that hospital I was NPO at midnight on a Thursday night for a CT-Scan w/contrast at 8 am Friday morning, Well at 8 am no CT-Scan, noon no CT and at 6:30 pm a CT-Scan, After the CT I was taken back upstairs to my room I asked the nurse where my dinner was? the nurse said that the Cafeteria people went home, I asked for a sandwich nurse said they didnât have any on the floor , I said go to another floor and get me on, Nurse said canât do that. I said send someone to Burger King and get me a damn hambuger!, That didnât happen, Well the next morning the tech was checking my vitals and I asked what about breakfast. I was NPO again , I went to find out what it was for I was told a heart cath I said no not happening,. I was feeling not so good and left the floor and went to the ER and checked in. my blood sugar was 31 and given D-50 in the IV I did not have anything to eat while I was there except for the ER. I got me a better Cardiologist at a lot better hospital now At Oklahoma City. The last hospital stay for the 4th to the 8th of this month, my blood sugar was taken before every meal and in between and my Novolog was given before meals and Levemir was given evenings and mornings. I had my Dexcom G5 and had to restart the sensor though. Iâm going to get a small backpack that will have my insulin pens glucose meter test strips, lancets, extra Dexcom G6 sensor, Apple Cellphone charger apple watch charger and my tablet. low blood glucose tablets and paste, emergency glucagon kit. So when I go to the ER and admitted or transported to another hospital I will have my stuff with me.
