Hi. I have been dealing with this for sometime now. I have been approved to recieve a partner/ dog.
First that is exactly what these dogs are, a partner.
They are very time consuming to train, from 18 - 22 mo. The costs run about $25,000 per dog. Not chump change.
Sorry to say, but there are unscrupulous so called trainers out there. Case in point a young family needed a dog for their young son. Found a trainer that said they would help. Well several months later a young dog arrived, no training. Just some basic obedience. They found dog did not allert.
This famoly had paid the 25 grand. Money came from fund raisers, family and friends. They were not wealthy people.
Be careful and do your research when checking out a trainer. There are great ones out there just be careful!
Ok now to the point.
First remember these are living creatures, they can and do make mistakes, they do get tired and my not allert to a night time low. Don’t expect a machine!
Pick your supplier/ trainer carefully. Make sure they will work with you after you have your bud/partner.
You need a trainer close for support when uou need it and you will
If you can find an organization/trainer that have minmal or no cost, mich better. They aren’t after the buck and truly want to help.
The organization that I am with has a cost of $50.00 for paperwork.
This is a long process, for me 4mo to be approved, now the wait for the propper dog. Anywhere from 6 to 18 months, in some cases up to 3 years.
This is the process I have been going through.
- Make applications after that about a mo.
A committee reviewed my app.
Backround check - 4 personal references
- Medical records review. I needed to qualify to their standards.
Another committee meeting - In home interview and home check
Another meeting - I was accepted/approved. and now the wait for the proper dog.
When the propper dog is identified.
The dog and I are brought together to see if we will work out for each other. Yep two way street.
That story is just as long.
Sorry for the length of this but the amount of information is overwhelming, to say the least.
Is it worth perseuing? In my opinion most definitely.
Is this route for everyone? Nope, that is a question you have to answer for yourself.
Haven’t even gotten to the support costs yet.
I, we are looking forward to our new family member getting here, not sure when but.
