How long for basals?

How long did it take you guys to get your basal rates and IC ratios right? So far it’s been a week and I still can’t get my numbers right. The standard protocol at my doctor’s office (Children’s) is to call every day to report BGs, insulin, and carbs and then we discuss how to adjust the rates. I’ve called every day and have done 3a.m. checks every night and I still don’t have my numbers down. Granted, it’s been only a week. But still…it’s hard!

I think your HCP should have had an Idea of where to start. It took me almost 2 weeks. However I was only reporting weekly. Daily might be to often unless your BG are way off

My daughter has been on the POD since mid April. Her first basal adjustment was two weeks later and we just made her second adjustment today. Her endo wanted two weeks of info before starting the adjustment process.

I’m still constantly adjusting mine, so many things can make them change! It’s kind of frustrating but my sugars are still way better than on MDI. Good luck and try to be patient with it!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I have been a podster for 5 years and I am still adjusting mine! I go in cycles…after about 2 weeks I will feel comfortable with one, then 2 weeks later, I start all over again. The whole thing takes an incredible amount of patience, and focus. Good luck, and PEACE!

Jon,

Hang in there buddy. It took me a month just to get my basals sorted out. I’ve never truly sorted out my I:C ratio, I’ve just EWAG’d (Educated Wild ■■■ Guessed).

If you haven’t already done so, I’d HIGHLY RECOMMEND you get and read Pumping Insulin, by Walsh and Roberts. It’s the pumpers’ bible.

Cheers, Mike

I have been on the Pod since April and it took me 6 weeks of daily calls/reporting to my diabetes nurse to figure out my basals. It was very trying but so worth it! It seemed like forever, but it is great now. I’d say that 90% of the time I am right on target. Hang in there…
