My admiration to Tyler for being willing to hear different experiences and to then make an educated choice as to whether certain foods are “worth it”. There are plenty of adults who don’t think about consequences of their actions that well! Sounds like you are pretty mature for your age, Tyler! I’m sorry if it was getting diabetes that helped you get there!
Currently I am using 100 - 120 carbs per day for anything I put in my mouth. I am sure as time passes we will lower that amount, but that’s it for right now. I am a type II on meds, diet and exercise to control my bls.
My breakfast typically contains 15 carbs. My lunch, 5 carbs. Dinner, 15 carbs. My snacks are fruit and are 15 carbs. So my typically day is 50 carbs or less. None of my carbs are from processed foods except for occasions and treats and the like.
I have been staying around 50g for the last 35 days or so and no problems. it definitely makes insulin bolusing easier. is bolusing a word? spell check says no… oh well. spell checker is obviously not a t1! hah!
Well Zoe thanks for the compliment but I will have say it is mostly my mom that stays on my A@@@ so I will take care of myself & I just dont want to hear it LOL. JUst Kidding mom !! Lately though like you said some the “foods” or just not worth it . Yes the big D does make us all grow up faster I guesss . But I look at it this way I love to eat so Diabetes was kinda a blessing cause I would probably be a overweight teen right now with Type 2 Diabetes .
Thanks Guys , I think I am gonna go a little lower . I like to eat the same thing everyday anyway ,I love hamburger patties with a slice of cheese& some bacon it is delish ! My mom makes some fried chisken with Parm cheese that is very good too . But I do like to have my 1/2 cup of carbsmart ice cream every night , that might be a hard habit to break LOL
My numbers are pretty good. Very few highs and lows, so I’m happy about that! Well, anyway, my grandma wants me to gain weight. I am 5 foot 6 and a half inches and weigh 110… so maybe I need to gain a little and I’m at a good carb number (~225) LOL, Tyler!
how old are you ? High carbs just now started bothering me in the last 6 months ,after I turned 15 . I have 50 carbs today ,will probably eat 15 more before I go to bed .
- I have always been pretty small, but got REALLY small last september right before diagnosis. Well, long story short, I am still small and need to gain a few extra pounds to be “average”. My grandma raised5 girls of her own and she said none of them have been this small, but my dad’s side of the fam are ‘toothpicks’ and I guess I got their gene.
well enjoy all those carbs cause it might change next year like it did for me . Well gain you a little weight girl
Hahaha! I will! lmao!
I eat the same thing everyday also but am trying to break it up and eat something different every 4th day (however, it is the same meal on the 4th day). I always have a cheeseburger for lunch but don’t eat bread/bun with it. I use mayo instead of ketchup (that really spikes me). My cheese has 1 gram of carb in so that is a nice low carb lunch.
I eat around 100 to 120 grams of carbs a day mostly from veggies and whole grains (forget the corn) and a smidgen of fruit such as blueberries, raspberries, etc. I find my BG is much better and I manage to avoid those awful spikes when I eat low carb.
Julia, enjoy your youth! If you’re healthy, and eat well, and exercise, and feel well, and have BGs in a good place, then don’t worry about your weight. The key is staying healthy (like, not anorexic), and your body will take care of itself.
I’ve cut back slightly because I’m eating less processed foods. Still getting 100-200 a day though. I don’t know if I could ever go under 100. What the heck would I eat???
You would be surprised Kari! There is much you can eat that does not contain carbs. I felt the same way when I switched in June of this year. I started experimenting with almond flour. I found you can make low carb high nutrient dense crackers with it. I take the cheese and toppings off pizza and make omelets with it. I do eat some strawberries and blueberries with cool whip for a tasty dessert. I still eat plenty of green veggies and all colors really. It is very possible to get plenty to eat and not lose energy. You can also be very full with a high fat, high protein diet.
My mom makes some almond flour brownies that are 1 carb , shes makes muffins cornbread . some kind of bread too
Thanks Natalie! I’m not really worried about it, its just that my grandma wants me to put on a few more pounds because she is not used to having such skinny girls I feel very healthy (except when my bg is high, which is not very often). Great advice, now I just got to tell granny…
You should have seen me right before diagnosis! I was 5foot 4 and weighed in at 86 pounds! Aahhh!
Well, 86 WAS thin, but that’s what you get with good ol’ Type 1.
I don’t know how old you are (but if your grandma is still alive, you can’t be too old! ) and I looked up your height on a BMI calculator, and if you’re a teen/early 20’s type person, you could weigh around 105 - 120 and still be on the bottom of the normal weight curve. Most people gain weight as they age, so the normal weight range allows for that, but as a young’un, you SHOULD be slender. Just be sure you get good nutrition and exercise, because while no one can predict the future of your health (there are a lot of uncontrollable factors which determine which people get sick or have complications), placing your bet on the things you CAN do to control the demon is certainly the wisest thing to do!
I am averaging 130 carbs per day. If I drop that to only 100 carbs, I do not have enough energy to workout at the gym and paint parts of my house. I am four pounds overweight, and eating more than 130 carbs per day causes me to start gaining weight, especially in the winter.
