Humulin R Gives Me Better Results Than Humalog/Novolog/Fiasp

I haven’t seen any difference in action time between Apidra and Humulin (or Novolin) R.

I use both R and Novolog. I am one of those low carb people mentioned above and essentially I only bolus for protein. The profile of R makes it a better insulin for protein food for most people. I usually have to bolus about 15 mins after eating. I use Novolog for corrections and usually then as IM’s. Interesting that you find R is faster, but as we all know we are all a little different. R is generally thought to be significantly less potent but I have to say I sometimes struggle to notice the difference.

Is Humulin R used in the same amounts as Humalog? I am also slow to react to Humulog. At least 2 hours after injection.

Are there specific cons to using Humulin R vs Humalog?

Thank you for your post. Your description sounds very similar to me.

Hi Maggie (I’m the original poster)… Thanks for adding your experiences to ours. Diabetic specialist doctors refuse to recognize that there are people who respond very slowly to “quick acting” insulins such as Humalog, Fiasp, Novalog etc. We need to make our problem heard so that reserach is done as to why we take 2 to 3 hours to respond to these fact-acting insulins. My “diabetic specialist” doctor refuses to believe that I take 2 to 3 hours to respond to Humalog and 1.5 to 2 hours to respond to Fiasp (a supposedly faster acting insulin than Humalog and Novalog).

I can’t really advise you on how to take Humulin R since I’m not a physician (I’m a veterinarian, and can only advice on insulin for diabetic animals…). I would talk to your doctor about it. I know that I PERSONALLY (and I’m not advising you to do what I do – TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR!!!) take the exact same amount of Humulin R as I do Fiasp or Humalog…

Thank you. My endo is pretty receptive. She is a T1 herself. We have had the discussion before that I am slow to react and some days no reaction at all. She has acknowledged some of her patients say the same thing.

I sent her an email a bit ago. I’ll see what she says.

You can buy R cheaply over the counter without a prescription, so the nice thing is anyone can try it without permission! Theoretically 1 unit of R should be equivalent to 1 unit of Humalog or Novolog, but it has a different profile meaning you might not be able to use it the same way. Of course the only way to find out is to experiment!

Does Humulin R come in a cartridge pen or only a vial?
