I have lost my confidence in pumping

Oh, well if they are replacing the pump then you can go from there and hope it doesn’t happen again and that the problem is gone.

Yes, I remember you talking about the insulin. I can’t remember if you said you had asked your medication provider to replace them. I once was concerned about how my insulin arrived and Medco said they thought it was fine but if I was concerned they would replace it. They did go ahead and charge me my $25 again for the 3 months of replacement insulin, but I didn’t mind that.

You ARE having a difficult weekend! Hang in there. Do something nice for yourself to make up for all the hassles.

Sanofi Aventis did replace one vial. It just seems strange with the insulin the first week is fine. I found someone up in NY that was having the same problem - it was fine for about 10 days. She ended up switching insulin because her insurance changed and did not cover Apidra.

I should just crawl in bed until tomorrow!

I am not sure how he started on using them. He gets them trough a pharamphcy in Minn. I can get more info when I see him

Another thing I was just wondering about, Kelly is what they learned about the first pump. I’m guessing they refurbished it so they probably had their techs go through it with a fine toothed comb to see what the issues were. I don’t know how likely it is you could get hold of the results, but it would sure be nice if you could!

I don’t know yet about that Zoe. They told me I could call 2 months after they received it back and then it would still take another 2 weeks to get the report. I actually had that on my list to call on Monday.

Thanks! I never heard of that but it is worth a try.

Cool, I thought it was a longshot, but it sounds like you might actually get some info that way. You definitely have had me put on my thinking cap today!

Let us know how it goes. I can only imagine how frustrated you must be. I hate things that don’t seem to make sense! (Don’t know where I got this idea that things are supposed to be logical!)

Kelly, I am sure that they told those people that first reported problems with the cartridges that there was no problem also. There always has to be many of them before they start looking at the problem, and even then, it takes time for a recall to happen. That is not just Animas, it has happened several times with each pump company. In the meantime they blame the customer or your technique. SO frustrating. I would imagine that a bad cartridge could damage a pump for sure. I would think that they would agree to replace your cartridges or at least some of them. Maybe don’t put the new pump on for a couple of days. Let it run and see if the bubbles continue to be a problem. maybe even carry it around with you so that it gets jostled around a bit.

I thought with the bad cartridges people could feel something wet when they took them out - I can’t remember that for sure. The cartridges I am using actually came back in Jan when I was having the problem. Animas sent me 2 overnight because I wasn’t expecting my order unitl the next week and this batch came the day they sent theirs.

I would really like to know what happened.

There is one thing that was a problem with the first pump that I did not realize was a problem until after they replaced it - I am waiting to find out what the report says before I say anything about that.

Today is Sunday, you are supposed to be resting not thinking!

There was a recall on Animas cartridges. You may have a batch of the recalled infusion sets. You can google the recall and it will give you the #'s on the boxs that were recalled.

I hope that helps. Maybe that is the problem

Gosh, now you have to tell me what it was! I guess it is the same here that people don’t read the whole thread either, sigh.

Mary, isn’t tonight family dinner night with the grand-dog?

Thanks Kellie. I actually wrote about the recall on my blog so I have the list of numbers. Mine wasn’t one of the recalled ones.

It normally is, lol, but one of Michael’s friend’s dad died yesterday, so he is at the funeral home tonight. That is okay, he got here to pick up the dog right at dinner time the other day, so of course he stayed.

The way you commented, I thought maybe you forgot to start dinner! At least you had a dinner night and even the dog got to visit.

Hi Kelly…

I can’t believe the bad luck you’re having! I’ve been using my Ping for about 3 years, and only had ONE instance of unexplained air in the tubing that whole time.

As others have said, there must be some “unknown factor” coming into play that is causing most of your problems. (As far as the 2nd pump goes…all I can say is that anyone can get a “lemon” now and then, though I certainly would think that a $6,000 pump would have to pass more than a casual “trial run” before it was sent out the door.

I’ve been racking my brain to come up with a possible cause of your problem, and all I can think of is:

  1. The connection at the top of the insulin cartridge is not tight enough or possibly…
  2. The connection at the site is not really secure.

I KNOW these are “stretches”…and you’ve probably checked these things 100 times…but… I noticed when I had my wife going through the steps of a “rewind-prime” and then attaching the line to the cartridge, she would frequently not tighten it as much as I would. (She has no feeling on the end of her fingers, and it’s hard for her to tell how tight the connection is.)

On the second point… I’ve occasionally found that I had not completely connected the line to the site. It had “clicked” but apparently, was (somehow) not properly connected. As a result, I always tug a bit on the connection after I’ve re-connected everything…just to be sure.

Good luck…and don’t give up!

that’s got to be scary and frustrating.
right now i am loving my 2020. actually it’s my third one, but the replacements were both due to problems with the battery compartment. never had problems with air in the tubing/cartridge or anything. and i’m probably one of people who treats their pump the worst since i have trouble with my hands from MS and drop it pretty often. actually, to save the pump i got tubing just the right length to make it land on my foot when i drop it.
but it just keeps going.
next year my warranty will be up and my insurer will cover a second one but i am hesitant about getting a ping then after some of what i read here and other places. i don’t need the newest thing, just the most reliable one.

Those are both good points by Joe Kelly, and I know that I have had problems with both on occasion with Melissa’s other pumps. I don’t think it would explain the noisiness though.

Thanks Joe. I did call Animas today to see if they have the report back on the first pump yet - the person I talked to had to send her supervisor an email to ask about it. I was told back in Jan that it could still take about 2 weeks to find out. When they get the pumps back, they put it thru testing to find out what was wrong with it (if anything). I do know there was something besides the air problem with that pump but I am waiting to hear the report before i say what that was. It was something I did not know was a problem until after it went back. The fact that this one is making a weird noise now makes me lean towards the pump but I have to wonder what is causing them to go bad - Chere had one of hers replaced because some bad insulin caused the motor to go bad. I keep wanting to come back to that as the problem.

The line not being tight on the site is something I will add to my list to things to check if I have problems in the future.
