Is there a syringe that is only 10 units with 1/4 Unit doses?
Dr. Bernstein mentions them in his book but I have not been able to find them online or at the pharmacy.
I very rarely take more than 10 units in a single shot today. I remember when I was first diagnosed, the plastic U-100 syringes were only available in 100 unit size! Of course I took more insulin back then too.
I’m sure they are kept in the same aisle as the “Swedish Crackers” that Dr B loves
Quoting from Dr. B’s Diabetes Solution: “It would therefore be ideal to have a long, slender syringe with a total capacity of 10 units and markings for every 1/4 unit spaced far enough apart that 1/8 unit can be accurately estimated visually. The numbers on the scale should be easy to read. The lines should be dark, but no thicker than 1/12 unit. Such a syringe, unfortunately, does not exist quite yet.”
Tim.
I see I misunderstood that sentence. No wonder the pharmacy looked at me like I grew horns out of my head. I finally found syringes that had 1/2 unit markings I guess I should feel fortunate about that. It cracks me up that the syringes all have cc’s and mL on them but you have to look hard to find the units marked on them. The syringe my doc ordered did up to 50 units, great if I want to kill myself, you could barely see the unit markings they were so close together, Thanks for helping me understand that I was looking for the elusive “ideal” syringe.

NovoPen Junior pens do 1/2 unit doses. want to drop needles and switch to pens? or are you still shooting for 1/4U accuracy? I can’t imagine getting a true 1/4 unit accuracy from anything I’ve seen (other than a pump). a pump will give you a tenth accuracy
Agreed… 1/4u is less than best possible precision with a syringe… If a little tiny drop is still dangling from the tip of the needle when it’s pulled out-- that’s more than 1/4u
I actually am trying to go to syringes for better accuracy, pens only dose in 1 unit doses (I didn’t know that Novopen Junior did 1/2 until it was mentioned today). I am trying to experiment to better control with less insulin. I am haven’t decided on a pump yet
. I am trying to get used to being a Type1. I have been reading everything I can get ahold of to help accomplish that. I guess shame on my doc for not telling me these options are available. I appreciate all the information that I have been given through all the wonderful people on this site.
thank your lucky stars that you have the internet now and great insulins. when I started, the only resources I had were books, which weren’t always up to date. No internet. No fast acting insulin. No 20-24 hour insulin. No reliable pumps. Not too many choices for meters, either. I started by using Tes-Tapes–to check urine, which was a total waste of time.
ie, this is a far better time to be a diabetic, and I appreciate all the advancements. For you, it’s already here!
