Insurance for a DEXCOM CGM - information needed

Hello all,

I have a particular situation I need advice on. I am an American citizen living in Guyana, South America. I would like to look into getting medical insurance from the USA to cover part of my DEXCOM G5/G4 CGM. I am very new to the whole process, so I have a few questions, I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide.

  1. What insurance company do you use for your diabetes supplies? Do you recommend any in particular given my situation?

  2. Did you have any difficulties acquiring coverage for your DEXCOM unit from your insurance company?

  3. How much do you pay for your DEXCOM components?

  4. I will be living in Guyana for a few more years but do plan to migrate to the USA. Will me not living in America affect me requesting to be partially covered by insurance?

Thank you for all replies. Please note I am completely new to the medical insurance stuff, so if you need anymore information from me to answer any of my questions, I will gladly answer.

My insurance company wanted documentation about hypo events (e.g., night-time or exercise lows). Good luck in your quest!

i am on Medicare and they pay 100% for my Medtronic Insulin Pump. ( i am T1 D ) they do not pay anything for CGMs. i have a secondary insurance called Oxford, and they pay 100% for my cgm. i use the Dexcom G5, and i love it. are you on the pump or do you do MDI (multiple daily injections)?

do you have American insurance? I don’t know that much about insurance outside the USA, but from this website, there are many others who live abroad, in Europe, etc. and i am certain that they can provide you with more info.

good luck. the CGM is an incredible device and i would never go about w/out it.
if you have to pay for it out of pocket, it is quite pricey. other, also, will know all about this as they are willing to make the financial sacrifice b/c they like the CGM so much.
