Happy day, Everyone
I like to tell myself that I am so much more than my bodily conditions…but I think for this forum, I better start “there” first, right?
Type 1 diabetes for 32 years–onset after a high speed, head on car collision. For all I know, the onset of Hashimoto’s could have begun then, too, but it wasn’t diagnosed until my thyroid was no longer functional a little over a year ago. (Because I am a life long entrepreneur, health insurance costs were prohibitive for me with a pre existing condition until 2014…when I got lab work and the discovery was made. Severe adrenal exhaustion diagnosed along with the Hashimoto’s.
Because I didn’t have health insurance, I became very pro-active with nutrition and supplements soon after developing T1 so it was natural for me to do a lot of research when I got the hashi diagnosis. After much research, I found a doctor who would prescribe natural desiccated thyroid for me. I discovered a fair amount of research that linked autoimmune conditions with gut permeability and dysbiosis. Long story short, my “no sugar added” diet became gluten-free and bone broth inclusive (along with a host of herbal and nutritive supplements) to assist in healing the gut lining and re-establish a healthy micro-biome.
I had been on four injections daily with a mix of R and N insulins–maintaining an A1c of around 6.8. Recently, I decided the protocols I was using to rebuild adrenal hormone levels wasn’t working well enough so I got a prescription for a dexcom CGM and changed to lantus and Humalog insulins. It was the changing over to the new insulin that brought me here (through Google )
Such a big help this forum has been for me already! After 32 years of doing it pretty much on my own, finding the valuable support here is like coming to a clear, cool spring of fresh water after a long and thirsty hike I am very excited to learn more and, perhaps, to be of help.
I don’t have a pressing question, but I would love to hear more from anyone who is dealing with multiple autoimmune conditions and/or adrenal issues along with T1.
Again, thanks for all the help…before you even knew me.
