I have noticed some muscle atrophy (sarcopenia) in my forearms and calves even while doing basically the same amount of weight lifting and bike sprints. i chalk some of this up to changes in hormone levels brought about by perimenopause. but i wonder if some sarcopenia is related to blood sugar dysregulation?
also, is there anyone with LADA here who is not on insulin who has built up muscle strength? searching the archives, i saw one post from someone who did build muscle, but they had to inject more insulin to do so. if someone is insulin deficient (not resistant), wouldn’t they have problems building muscle?
I don’t have an answer, but it’s a great question. I’m trying to recall times after my 4 knee surgeries when I had some obvious atrophy and how I built it back—yes, this was pre-dx for me, but as a T2, one learns that this scourge can tunnel in and make a mess of things before one ever gets dx. …Anyway, I am curious and will be following. Thanks for asking the question…Blessings, as ever…Judith…
I was diagnosed LADA about 3 years ago and I’m currently not taking insulin (female 29). I haven’t noticed any trouble building muscle. I started lifting weights about a year ago and I’m definitely stronger. I’m also taking a spin class and feel that I can keep up with everyone. I’ve always been pretty athletic.
When I was younger I had no problem building muscle. Remember Exogenous insulin is a banned substance in the Amateur Athletic world for a none PWD. You problem will be meeting your nutritional needs since diabetes wreaks havoc on your metabolism. When I was cycling my biggest problem was packing on enough calories before a race, I always suffered from low energy. Most of the events I participated in would have a big banquet the night before the race and many competitors would easily pack on a extra 3000-4000 calories. I could never do this without having extremely high BG so I always had a nutritional deficit. If you do not have enough insulin in your system your body will burn it’s muscles up to survive.
