Is diabetes now considered a disability?

I am looking for a new job and I am doing my online applying (bleech right). Anyhow, there is “Diversity” questions on there and one is a form about disabilities and they ask if you have or have had any… and I was surprised to see diabetes on the list!!! They don’t ask you to specify what disability it is or whether you still have it or not (I am also hard of hearing) …

I thought I remember asking someone before about this and the answer was no… Has this changed?

If that is really true, wouldn’t all diabetics qualify for disability checks?

It is optional to answer but I did (thinking perhaps it might work in my favor!) This is big well known company by the way.

Seems weird to me though… Only because me being hard of hearing looked into this before and I was told even completely deaf people don’t qualify for disability only blind people…

Hmmmm… What is everyone else’s experience?

People get disability checks for many reasons and some do get a disability check for diabetes.
I don’t consider myself disabled because of diabetes or having high functioning autism. However, if you feel using the ADA to get a job, by all means do it if you feel it will help.

Thanks for your feedback. Yeah I don’t feel I am disabled really but I was shocked to see that on there and I was going back and forth wondering if they had that on there because they really wanted to weed people out or are they truly wanting to hire people who have these so they can fill a “diversity” quota and thought twice about answering? In the end I would rather be honest… my hearing would get in the way more than diabetes anyhow…

I don’t know how answering the disability question affect the situation. You do not know if it will harm or help.
I have been self employed again for the past six months or so, but I did have a job in the winter working in a warehouse and I do not remember how I answered the question. The job was through a staffing firm.

I have never considered my diabetes a disability. I have a full time job and about 6 years ago filled out paperwork for FMLA. I use it usually when I have to drive to work & blood sugar is low. I call it in and don’t get in trouble for being late due to the diabetes. I don’t use it very often but once in awhile I need to leave for a hour for pump issues. And I used the American Disability Act to help keep my breaks & lunch on a timely basis. Like I said before I’m not disabled but I do use my resources.
