In mid April, my A1C was 14.5 and BG was in the high 400's. Now, my morning BG readings are between 95-150. I had blood work for a different problem and my A1C has dropped to 10 which is better but not great. I take 14 units of Lantus at bedtime and 3-6 units of Humalog before meals. I am wondering if I should stay with that or add a little more Lantus & Humalog. Should I make an appt with my endo? Or a nutritionist? Or keep doing what I am doing and see if the A1C drops after a few more months? I know about how many carbs I eat but I don't see how to figure out insulin units vs sugar. Or is sugar included in the carbs? Thanks
Hi Beatrice. I was also confused by this in the beginning and I was taught that sugar content is part of carbs, so if you are looking at a package of food, you need to see the "Carbohydrates" entry. I may have this a bit off, but I believe that in the sample below, you could reduce your Carb count by 3 - one half of the fiber content. Perhaps someone can confirm/refute that.
My diabetic specialist has a nutritionist in-house so I have the benefit of one appointment. It might be preferable to find such a specialist if possible. I suppose that first and foremost, an endo would be ideal.
I think you've done a terrific job so far of reducing your levels, so congratulations on that!
Thanks. I assume it takes a few months or more, for the A1C to reflect my current BG's. And now, I realize why I had a spike when I ate a cup of HD raspberry sorbet! HD ice cream is not as high in carbs. I prefer sorbet but I'll sacrifice and have the ice cream instead :-)

A1c reflects average blood sugar over approximately 3 months. If your fastings are so much better and you haven't been sitting around high all the time, I'd wait for a couple of months for a more accurate reflection of your current numbers.
