Hi Folks,
I have recently changed from Lantus (12 units at 7:30pm) after 11 years as I always seem to have a foggy head of late. I have changed to Levemir after reading on the net that it was a good alternative to Lantus. I must say that I pretty much feel the same. I have been on the new stuff now for just over five days.
Has anyone made the change or had any side effects on these insulin’s?

Hi thanks for the reply. No my nurse has said to try the daily shot, had mixed results so far. Taking 13 units at 7:30pm instead of 11 units of Lantus. I am just a little disappointed as I really thought it was the Lantus making me feel confused and foggy headed.
Lantus gave me a constant headache, but no side effects whatsoever with Levemir. Lantus doesn't quite last for 24 hours; Levemir definitely does not. You might find it useful to try a split dose of Levemir.
Ok cool. How do I go about that, say I am on 13 units. Do I do 6 in the morning at say 7:30 then 7 at 7:30pm? thanks for the advice :)
Yes, splitting approx. half and half is a good way to start; you may have to tweak it. We're all individual of course, but I start my morning Levemir at 7:30AM; taking my nightly dose at 9 to 9:30PM handles the dawn phenomenen perfectly for me.
Sorry the dawn phenomenen? Is that the high in the morning? I should know this after 11 years lol
Well, there have been a lot of good discussions on TuD about the DP, but I'm not very good at describing it, just know how it affects me. I need the peak of my Levemir to hit around 2 to 3:00Am for good night blood glucose readings. When I get up at approx. 7:00AM, my BG starts to rise, so I immediately take one (preventive) unit of Apidra. (If you check out the forum, I expect you can get a lot of info on DP.)
Ok thats great, thanks I will take a look. I will see how I go for a couple of days and then may go to a split.
I agree stick with one dose for a few days and watch for any spiking between hours 18 and 26. While it is true that most people on Levemir need to split it to get 24 hour coverage, YMMV.
