That’s why I will stick to low carb, I just need to stop that hunger.
I wass reading his interview about amylin and how he puts everyone on symlin, can it be that? i don’t have enough amylin and will never feel full? Or may be it is emotional, I can’t guess.
Symlin is never heard of i Sweden, according to my nurse, btw.
Dr. B is a big fan of not only using Smylin (which is the synthetic version of the hormone amlyin), but he also uses Byetta and Victoza in his T1 patients to control hunger. You might talk with your medical team about trying Victoza for hunger management.
Last time my nurse thought I need to eat more carbs for that. And went on about importance of them for the brain… I will try to talk to the docor next time
Brian, is it posßible to see if one has amylin production or not?
Your brain will consume carbs. The IOM suggested that we need 130 g to satisfy those needs (see RDI). They also note that all those needs can be met through our body’s natural ability to make glucose from protein. And then it turns out our brains can run on ketones (made from fat). Perhaps even better. Some people report being sharper and more alert when in ketosis. Your nurse is just uninformed (and I have references).
Ps. Amylin is produced by your beta cells, Amylin production fails with insulin production. There is no point in checking Amylin production if you already need insulin.
Brian. I'd love to see those references. I have this "discussion" with people sometimes and the ammunition would prove useful.
:)
Hey Tabacblond:
As Brian mentioned earlier, Bernstein recommends Incretin Memetics like Victoza, Byetta, and Symlin for "off label" use to manage cravings in T1's because of our reduced Amylin production.
I also am on low-carb and had tremendous cravings at times. Usually in the afternoon or after dinner.
I'm a patient of his and have to say it's worked brilliantly in that regard, however with some trial and error, and some potential risks. Victoza shot my cholesterol numbers up substantially (this is a very rare side effect - I was one of the lucky ones...). I then switched to Byetta, which also quashed my cravings immediately and had no effect on cholesterol. Several months into using it I found it also provided tremendous BG control, allowing me to stop using mealtime insulin. There has been an argument that it can regenerate beta cells, and clearly it was lighting up the ones I had left to perfectly cover my low carb meals. I thought I had found the perfect wonder drug until I read this: http://phlauntdiabetesupdates.blogspot.com/2013/03/byetta-victoza-bydureon-appear-to-cause.html . This study confirmed that in the trial subjects that Byetta and Januvia did indeed regenerate beta cells, but they were mutated in such a way to result in pre-Cancerous pancreatic abnormalities. Granted, the trial size is small and Dr. Bernstein is advising me not to jump to conclusions until more data is available, but in the interest of caution I've discontinued using it except for the rare exception.
Interestingly, my between meal cravings have subsided substantially since discontinuing Byetta. However, I'm going to give Symlin a try, as it most closely resembles Amlyin, which non-T1's produce naturally.
Christopher
I can't low carb, I actually gain weight doing it. For me and my diabetes, I do much better with moderate carbs and not left feeling so deprived, and my weight stays more stable.
If it is not blood sugar spikes causing your cravings maybe you should allow yourself a few more carbs per each meal or maybe more snacks throughout the day.
Have you tried lower carb veggies? If I am in the mood to snack and need the sensation of chewing/munching on something my go to food is celery. I never need to bolus as my basal covers the carbs. Celery takes me forever to chew and I find after 15 minutes that I am full and my jaw is worn out.
Christopher, thank you for sharing! The information about Victoza is a bit worrying, I understand that you've decided to stop using it. Otherwise it did sounded like a magic drug! As I said earlier, Symlin is not known over here, I will ask my doctor in september, but I doubt any positive outcome for me...
Would love to here about your results with Symlin, unfortunately, the Symlin group is very quiet at the moment.
May be, If I don't get it work, I will try going back. Thanx
Thanx, I forgot about it. Will buy today :)
Are you completely satisfied with dinner?
Another approach could be the theory that says you crave something if your body miss something essential i.e. vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and the like. If this is the case you will never feel satisfied or really calm.
The point is not what you eat, but what you actually absorb. This means taking supplements might not be enough. You could try to add green smoothies to your diet for a while and see if that helps. I make 1 1/2 l. green smoothie at the time, keep in the fridge. I think I found out it was as low as 1-2 carbs pr 100 ml, but do your own math to be sure.
thanks, I will look into it. I eat a lot of vegetables everyday, but may be it is not enough
it feel so. But after 20 minutes my hunger begins :-)
From the website "Blood Sugar 101" I found this:
6. Eat LOTS of Greens and Berries.
If you only eat meat and cheese on your "low carb" diet you are going to end up missing valuable nutrients. If you eat meat and greens and packaged "low carb" foods full of chemicals and hidden carbs, you are also going to miss out on those nutrients--and you are going to end up gaining weight, as many packaged foods include ingredients that are forms of MSG (like hydrolyzed vegetable protein) that make you hungry.
In the old days, people in the low carb community used to tell each other "When you visit the supermarket, Shop the edges" . That's because, typically, fruit, veggies, meat, nuts, eggs and dairy are arranged around the outside edge of the market and all the prepared foods are in the aisles. The more you eat from the edges, the healthier you will be. Frozen veggies are fine, too.
7. Don't Use Soy Protein
Many low carb recipes tell you to use soy flour. Don't. It tastes nasty to many of us, and soy can have negative effects on your thyroid and can disturb your sex hormone balance. Whey protein powder tastes better than soy and has no hormonal effects. I use it in quite a few of my recipes. Vanilla or plain are best for cooking.
If you find yourself feeling depressive after a few weeks of your low carb diet, cut out any of the soy foods you may have added, including tortillas, "low carb" breads, or cereals. You may be amazed at how much cheerier you feel.
thank you!
We don't use soy or prepackaged foods at all, I eat only greens that could be found above the ground :) I am restrictive with berries, probably should add them back and cut on cheese and butter, replace with coconut oil instead, But I cannot force myself to like it. I feel it tastes everywhere...
Symlin helps me with the hunger cravings, it's not perfect, I have some nauseau with it and it can't be taken with a correction for a high obviously. Also just let yourself eat a snack when you want to. I agree with just bolusing more sometimes and letting yourself eat a little more when you want to. I find things like nuts and cheese fill me up, so higher fat/protein helps with the hunger too. Do you have another doctor you can ask about symlin? Just search it online too.
