Yesterday I attended the Bay Area Diabetes Summit (as in San Francisco Bay Area), sponsored by CarbDM, ADA, JDRF, etc. It was held at the University of California San Francisco Medical Center, and I attended along with several others from my JDRF-sponsored Type 1 Women’s Group. Wow! What a conference of hope and optimism. The big emphasis was on the progress on the artificial pancreas. We heard Dr. Bruce Buckingham (Stanford–he wins the Awesome Guy of the Universe Award IMO) and Dr. Francine Kaufman (Medtronic) talk about some of their respective passions, but the greatest thing was a panel discussion with five people who have participated in clinical trials for the artificial pancreas. Dr. Kaufman expects the Medtronic version to be available in April 2017. One of the founders of Bigfoot Biomedical was in the artificial pancreas audience, and the Damiano bionic pancreas got lots of mention. The clinical trial participants were quite enthusiastic about the technology. Bottom line, we walked away with a lot of optimism about what is on the horizon for those of us with Type 1. Wow!
